OAA Picks: Week Ten.

Week Ten: First Round:

Oxford at Clarkston: The weather in this game could play a huge roll in determining who wins this game. The Wolves have enough weapons to move on over the Wildcats. DD PICK: CLARKSTON 42, OXFORD 21.

Livonia Stevenson at West Bloomfield: First home playoff game has built a lot of excitement in Laker land. They will be hyped up because they will get another one next week. DD PICK: WEST BLOOMFIELD 31, LIVONIA STEVENSON 7.

Southfield at Detroit Martin Luther King:  The Blue Jays have won the last two meetings with the Crusaders. Southfield is more balanced in this match up while Detroit Martin Luther King relays on the run. This game will be close but going with the Oakland County team because of balance. DD PICK: SOUTHFIELD 31, DETROIT MARTIN LUTHER KING 21.

Farmington at Oak Park: Is there any doubt who is the better team here, the Falcons have won the last two meetings with the Knights but Farmington played in a lower division and that will hurt them against Oak Park. DD PICK: OAK PARK 42, FARMINGTON 0.

Berkley at Groves: This is a rematch of a 32-29 victory won by the Bears. The Falcons are at home here and should get a measure of revenge and then for a reward they get Birmingham Brother Rice. DD PICK: GROVES 31, BERKLEY 21.

Harrison at Fenton: The Hawks remember what happened two years ago in Genesee Country but this Harrison team is different against an undefeated Tigers team that has done well in the Flint Metro League all season. The outcome however will be different. DD PICK: HARRISON 35, FENTON 21.

Volleyball District Preview.

These are the preview of OAA teams who are in districts as we start district play starting on Monday. Now I don’t have an official match up preview of each game and each team’s chances at winning their respective district. The games will be played on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

District 21: at Detroit Renaissance.

Favorite: Mercy.

Team that Challenges the Favorite: No One.

Preview: Mercy is the overwhelming favorite in this district and the Marlins had a bad three game loss in the Catholic League semifinals to Pontiac Notre Dame Prep a few weeks ago. I’m not sure how the Detroit teams would do against the OAA or Mercy. The best Detroit team looks to be Detroit Renaissance although Detroit Cody and Detroit Mumford will have some says. Farmington and Southfield will give Mercy a battle but in this district this one is Mercy’s to lose.

Team that Challenges the Favorite: Hazel Park.

Preview: Sterling Heights have the talent to advance in this bad district, not sold on any of the four other teams including the Vikings. Warren Mott and Warren Cousino were beaten handily last week and Warren Woods Tower is not very good. Hazel Park could give Sterling Heights its best game but they don’t have the horses or experience to compete with the Stallions this year.

Favorite: Groves.

Teams that Challenges the Favorite: Royal Oak, Oak Park, Berkley.

Preview: When looking at this district, Groves is the favorite because of home court but keep an eye on Berkley, Royal Oak, and Oak Park. These three teams can beat the defending district champs. Oak Park has talent, Berkley has experience and Groves has struggled lately. Lathrup has a long shot. Expect a four team race, I'm leaning Royal Oak because of experience.

Team That Challenges the Favorite: Seaholm, Bloomfield Hills.

Preview: This district is interesting because you have two state powers in Birmingham Marian and Birmingham Seaholm. Bloomfield Hills, North Farmington, and Harrison are expected to give it their best but this is a two team district. Marian won the Catholic League and was in the state finals last season. Seaholm placed third in the Red and went to the state quarterfinals two seasons ago. The key is the Maple Forest, if they make it a hostile environment in Marian's small gym then they have a shot at winning this district.

Preview: The Eagles are favorite here because of experience but Walled Lake Central will be a factor. Walled Lake Northern and Walled Lake Western will struggle here but West Bloomfield is the dark horse.

Teams that Challenges the Favorite: Avondale, Troy.

Preview: The Red Hawks are the defending district champs, won the White, and have a win at Troy. Avondale has motivation because they fell to Troy Athens last season in the district finals. Troy has experience and have played a tough schedule. Kettering and Mott could struggle and Pontiac as well. This district is huge for Athens because the regional is on their home court.

Preview: There are two state powers, a legionary coach and three blue collar teams. Lake Orion and Clarkston are the top two teams here. Stoney Creek is the dark horse while Adams has played better. Rochester is young but talented. Oxford is young and experienced but doesn't have the star talent from a season ago. Expect this one to be a good. I like the team with the home court and modivation to win out.

WIN OF THE NIGHT: Clarkston 31, Harrison 24: The Wolves had to score a touchdown with three minutes left in the game to beat the Hawks. Clarkston now looks ahead to the division one playoffs where they deal with an Oxford team that they beat handly in week five.

TOUGH LOSS: Adams 30, Orion 26: The Highlanders scored a touchdown late against the Dragons and then recovered a fumble on the kickoff. Both teams are out of the playoffs in 2014 but both teams will be playoff bound in 2015.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME: Oak Park 49, Oxford 14: What a way to make a statement Knights, you got your first win overall against the Wildcats and you basically sentenced Oxford to play Clarkston first while you got Farmington next.

TEAM THAT NEEDS A HUG: Avondale: The Yellow Jackets suspended five players for the game against Waterford Kettering and ended up losing 63-20 to the Captains. The game cost Avondale a playoff spot and they have no one but themselves to blame for it.

Playoff Matches Week Ten:

Division Two:

Harrison at Fenton (Region 2, District 1): The Hawks are the fourth seed in region two, district one at 7-2 but earned a nice draw with a trip to Genesee County and Fenton on a Saturday afternoon. The Tigers won the Flint Metro League and come in unbeaten but have seen Harrison before. Fenton eliminated the Hawks in 2012 from the playoffs. Harrison looks to return the favor in Genesee County and move on to face either South Lyon or Walled Lake Western.

Southfield at Detroit Martin Luther King (Region 3, District 1): The Blue Jays beat the Crusaders 22-19 in 2012 but this rematch will be in Detroit. The key will be Southfield’s secondary against one of the best running backs in the state. Detroit Martin Luther King lost a tough one to Detroit Cass Tech in the Detroit Public School League final. This match up is a good draw for the Blue Jays. They got a shot here.

Farmington at Oak Park (Region 3, District 2): This maybe the worst draw that the Falcons have had, a rivalry game with the Knights in Knight Valley. Add to the fact that you have one of the vocal critics to Farmington’s division change from the White to the Blue in Greg Carter. Oak Park will be rolling here and add to the motivation here is that Farmington has beaten the Knights the last two times they met.

Berkley at Groves (Region 4, District 2): This will be a rematch of a 32-29 Bears win in week seven. Both teams enter this game on losing streaks (Groves Three, Berkley Two.) The Falcons look to seek revenge at home against the Bears and the winner will likely get a shot at Birmingham Brother Rice. If Berkley wins over Groves again, they could get a home game out of this since the Warriors also play at Hurley Field.

Division One:

Oxford at Clarkston (Region 2, District 1): Last season the Wildcats lost 30-27 to the Wolves. This season Clarkston hammered Oxford on its homecoming this season. This is a sentence for Oxford playing at Clarkson. The winner of this game will play either Romeo or Lapeer. If it’s Lapeer it could be trouble but remember Romeo beat Orion in the playoffs before losing to Clarkston and the Bulldogs might want another shot.

Livonia Stevenson at West Bloomfield (Region 2, District 2): The Lakers are back in the playoffs for the first time since 2008 and now they have a home game and a rematch with the Spartans. The team that beat West Bloomfield in Livonia but these two teams are in different stratospheres. The Lakers have the talent and have won tough games at Oxford, Orion, Southfield, and Stoney Creek while the Spartans are rebuilding their program and have done well in the tough KLAA South. The winner of this district will get either Walled Lake Central or Waterford Mott who plays on the other side of the bracket.

Dragons Fall to Highlanders, Dark Days are Here.

Seasons were not meant to be and history was made for the wrong reason.

That’s what happened on Friday night at Rochester Adams.

The Highlanders (5-4, 4-3 White) scored a late touchdown on a Dragons defense that has struggled all season long and recovered a fumble on a kickoff return giving them a 30-26 victory over Lake Orion.

The Dragons finish the season 4-5 and 4-3 in the Red and had its first losing season since 1996. Lake Orion will not be in the playoffs for the first time since 2000 when they finished 5-4.

Lake Orion will lose 20 seniors this season including Matt Krause and Zach Serzo.

There will be a lot of questions heading into next season. Clearly Lake Orion needs a new identity for next season and with a favorable schedule they could turn it around but for now there are no playoffs this season and next season couldn’t come soon enough.

OAA Picks: Week Nine.

1. Clarkston at 3. Harrison: The Wolves enter this game riding high after a third straight Red crown. The Hawks with only one loss this season will have its hands full with Clarkston. DD PICK: CLARKSTON 42, HARRISON 14. ANT PICK: CLARKSTON 42, HARRISON 21.

2. West Bloomfield at 4. Southfield: Two speedy teams going at it in this game, difference could be line play and the Lakers have it but this game will be close. DD PICK: WEST BLOOMFIELD 28, SOUTHFIELD 24. ANT PICK: WEST BLOOMFIELD 35, SOUTHFIELD 21.

5. Farmington at Walled Lake Central: Nate Krumm will be the best quarterback the Falcons have seen all season since Javon Shaw Week One. Farmington could have some issues in this game especially defensibly. DD PICK: WALLED LAKE CENTRAL 35, FARMINGTON 7. ANT PICK: WALLED LAKE CENTRAL 49, FARMINGTON 28.

7. Oxford at 6. Oak Park: The Knights are 0-8 all time against the Wildcats, that changes Friday. DD PICK: OAK PARK 28, OXFORD 21. ANT PICK: OAK PARK 49, OXFORD 18.

8. Avondale at Waterford Kettering: Both teams are desperate to get into the playoffs. The Captains need this game more sitting at 4-4 but it will be the Yellow Jackets who get the magic six to the playoffs in a shootout. DD PICK: AVONDALE 38, WATERFORD KETTERING 35. ANT PICK: AVONDALE 28, WATERFORD KETTERING 7.

Waterford Mott at 9. Groves: The Falcons are riding a two game losing streak need this game for confidence against a Corsairs team that needs one win to make the playoffs. I think Mott will be sweating on Sunday. DD PICK: GROVES 35, WATERFORD MOTT 31. ANT PICK: GROVES 28, WATERFORD MOTT 24.

Orion at 10. Adams: Two disappointing teams going at it, looking at this game both teams will be very good next year considering it will be a tough choir to make the playoffs. Orion hasn’t had a losing season since 1996 and Adams will likely miss the playoffs for the second time in three seasons but this game will be the Dragons and they will be praying on Sunday. DD PICK: ORION 35, ADAMS 21. ANT PICK: ORION 42, ADAMS 21.

Stoney Creek at Rochester: This season has been a rough season for the Cougars but they did beat Adams. Stoney Creek should finish their season on a high note with a win over their city rivals and gain the Rochester city championship for the first time ever. DD PICK: STONEY CREEK 42, ROCHESTER 0. ANT PICK: STONEY CREEK 28, ROCHESTER 0.

Hazel Park at Grosse Isle: Grosse Isle is 6-2 right now and is rolling through the downriver league. They should do well against a Vikings team who likely won’t win a game again this season. DD PICK: GROSSE ISLE 42, HAZEL PARK 6. ANT PICK: GROSSE ISLE 35, HAZEL PARK 0.

Almont at Ferndale: Almont is ranked fifth in the state in Division Five. The Eagles have won two straight, since the game is not in Lapeer County, got to take the team from Oakland County. DD PICK: FERNDALE 28, ALMONT 24. ANT PICK: ALMONT 49, FERNDALE 28.

Troy at Royal Oak: Two bad teams going at it here. The question is which passing game will show up and it’s the Ravens Homecoming. Happy Homecoming Royal Oak but got the Colts winning close. DD PICK: TROY 21, ROYAL OAK 17. ANT PICK: TROY 42, ROYAL OAK 0.

Westland John Glenn at Southfield Lathrup: Westland John Glenn’s playoff hopes are on the line at Lathrup Village. It won’t be an easy game for the Chargers but with the win last week over Berkley it could be two in a row. DD PICK: SOUTHFIELD-LATHRUP 24, WESTLAND JOHN GLENN 21. ANT PICK: WESTLAND JOHN GLENN 28, SOUTHFIELD-LATHRUP 17.

Dearborn Heights Robichaud at Berkley: The Bears were upset last week by Lathrup 20-17. If they want a home playoff game, they must win this game. DD PICK: BERKLEY 28, DEARBORN HEIGHTS ROBICHAUD 21. ANT PICK: BERKLEY 24, DEARBORN HEIGHTS ROBICHAUD 21.

Troy Athens at North Farmington: The Red Hawks were a disappointment this season but looking at this game, this has the makings of a good game but going with Troy Athens over the Raiders. DD PICK: TROY ATHENS 38, NORTH FARMINGTON 28. ANT PICK: TROY ATHENS 28, NORTH FARMINGTON 14.

Bloomfield Hills at Seaholm: The Maples have struggled all season long but if they want to go out on a good note they must shut down Nate Emery and the Blackhawks. DD PICK: SEAHOLM 31, BLOOMFIELD HILLS 21. ANT PICK: BLOOMFIELD HILLS 28, SEAHOLM 27.

Pontiac concluded it’s season at 1-7 and 1-6 in the Blue this season.

WIN OF THE NIGHT: Southfield Lathrup 20, Berkley 17: This game was a huge win for Coach Keith Stevens and his Lathrup team. The Chargers have won two straight games and are making immediate progress. For the Bears this is a tough loss and have lost two straight. It doesn’t get any easier with Dearborn Heights Robachlud next.

TOUGH LOSS: Farmington 24, Groves 20: Groves has lost two straight games and now has a tough one against Waterford Mott but it will be at home. Farmington has a tough one at Walled Lake Central coming up and has won seven straight games. For Groves this is not a good way to get into the playoffs.

TEAM THAT NEEDS A HUG: Oak Park: The Knights had a chance to win the White outright and play Clarkston well that won’t happen now. Oak Park lost 20-16 to Southfield and now the Knights will have to play Oxford, a team that they have lost eight straight times in its history. That’s a tough one for this experienced group of Knights.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME: Clarkston 42, Orion 7: This game was a mismatch from the start, it started with a Dragons touchdown early, only to see the Wolves score 42 unanswered points at your place. That hurts. These are clearly two teams going in different directions, Clarkston going up while Orion is going down.

Week Nine Games:

Top Games: Week Nine:

1. Clarkston at 3. Harrison: In what was supposed to be a match between Clarkston and Oak Park will now be Clarkston and Harrison. This is a bad matchup for the Hawks because of depth and also the Wolves have a lethal passing attack. Harrison has to play perfect if it has any shot at pulling off the upset.

2. West Bloomfield at 4. Southfield: The Blue Jays and Lakers could put up a shootout in this matchup but the key will be is can quarterback Tristian Jackson throw against Southfield’s Division One secondary, we will find out in this one. A lot of speed will be on display.

7. Oxford at 6. Oak Park: The Knights have lost eight straight games to the Wildcats and two of them were with this same class. Oak Park has to find a way to shut down Oxford’s pound the rock attack to give themselves a chance in this game.

5. Farmington at Walled Lake Central: This will be a tough matchup for the Falcons. Farmington has won seven straight games but this matchup against the Vikings will be the toughest one since week one when Farmington was destroyed by Harrison. Walled Lake Central is one of the top teams in the KLAA.

Waterford Mott at 9. Groves: The Falcons have lost two straight games and they need a bounce back game against a very good Corsairs team. Mott is battling to try and get to the playoffs and needs this game to do so. Groves needs this game for confidence reasons.

Orion at 10. Adams: This rivalry is back for the first time since 2009, the Dragons have won two straight games in this rivalry. Both teams sit at 4-4 and have an outside shot at getting into the playoffs at 5-4. Winner is praying while the loser is done for the winter.

The Dark Days of Lake Orion Football Are Here.

The dark days of Lake Orion football are here now.

For the first time since 2000, the Dragons could miss the playoffs after getting blown out by the Clarkston Wolves 42-7 on Friday night.

Lake Orion (4-4, 4-3 Red) struck first as running back Matt Krause went 62 yards for a Dragons touchdown to go up 7-0 early in the first quarter.

Clarkston (8-0, 7-0 Red) would then score 42 unanswered points the rest of the game and was led by quarterback DJ Zezula, Austin Engler whom had a breakout game, and running backs Nolan Eriksen and Centris Williams.

The Wolves and Dragons are in two different stratospheres right now. Clarkston came off a Division One State Championship last season and has progressed with its program. Lake Orion has regressed since the 2012 season. Lake Orion hasn’t beaten Clarkston since 2010, the year they won their State Championship and hasn't had a losing season since 1996 when they finished 4-5.

A playoff trip does not seem likely this season though.

Lake Orion will travel to Rochester Adams to face the Highlanders, it will be the first match up since 2009 when the Dragons beat the Highlanders 23-13. Adams sits at 4-4 and 3-4 White on the season and the winner of this game will be praying on Sunday while the loser is done. Both teams have been disappointing this season.

1. Clarkston vs. 10. Orion, when looking at this game, most of the so called media experts are picking Clarkston to win this game. Most base it on their QB, DJ Zezula and Clarkston’s powerful offense but Lake Orion has a pretty good offense of its own. Expect this game to be a shootout

WIN OF THE NIGHT: Berkley 32, Groves 29:  Huge win for coach Chris Sikoria. The Bears had to overcome the Falcons offense and gave the Falcons their first loss of the season. Groves had two touchdowns called back and Berkley found a way to survive tonight at Hurley Field and will go to Lathrup next then they will play Dearborn Heights Robachuad in two weeks. The road for the Falcons gets tough with Farmington next week and Waterford Mott in two weeks.

TOUGH LOSS: Oxford: It was going to be tough for the Wildcats against a very good Lakers team. West Bloomfield returns to the playoffs for the first time since 2008 and could very well be a threat in the Division One. Oxford will make the playoffs at some point but it wasn’t tonight as they lost 21-0 at home, their first loss since Orion beat them 35-30 on the blue turf last season.

TEAM THAT NEEDS A HUG: Bloomfield Hills: The Blackhawks were up 26-14 late in the third quarter against Orion only to see the Dragons score two touchdowns in the second half and stun the homecoming crowd at Bloomfield Hills. The Blackhawks lost 27-26 and now must pick up the pieces and get ready for Oxford next week.

TEAM THAT NEEDS A HUG TOO: Ferndale: The Eagles lost a tough one 28-15 to Avondale. Now they must beat Hazel Park and then go on the road and beat the fifth ranked team in division five, Almont in two weeks. Playoff hopes are grim but never say never.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Southfield-Lathrup 7, Pontiac 6: In what was Keith Stephens return to Pontiac, you would think that the Chargers would score more than seven points against a poorest Phoenix team devastated in the talent pool but it wasn’t the case, give credit to John Floyd’s Pontiac squad for battling hard. It is a shame that next week against Avondale will be their last game of the season.

Top Five Games Next Week:

1. Clarkston at 10. Orion: The Wolves have won 20 straight games since the Rockford playoff game of the 2012 season but will have its toughest game of the season as they travel to Orion to take on a Dragons team that is desperate in trying to make the playoffs. The experts will pick Clarkston but this rivalry game does have some magic on it and this week could be more of the same.

2. Oak Park at 5. Southfield: This is a rivalry game here between the Blue Jays and the Knights. Oak Park will have John Kelly while Southfield has a division one loaded secondary. This game will be interesting to watch oh and the White is at stake as well here.

6. Farmington at 9. Groves: In what would have been the Blue title game instead turns into a chance for Groves to share with Farmington the Blue crown. Farmington comes in red hot after winning six straight games since losing to Harrison in week one. Groves lost to Berkley last week. This one should be interesting.

3. West Bloomfield at Stoney Creek: This will be the Cougars most important game of the season and add that it’s their homecoming. Stoney Creek needs to win out to make the playoffs. It won’t be easy against a Lakers team that is 2-0 in homecoming games this season. West Bloomfield is back in the playoffs for the first time since 2008 and they could very well take the Cougars out of the playoffs with a win.

7. Oxford at Bloomfield Hills: This game will be a battle of quarterbacks as Nate Emery takes on Glacier Wallington. In what could be a low scoring game because both teams like time possession football, both teams will rely a lot on their defenses to do well in this game.

Dragons Escape Blackhawks. Keep Playoff Hopes Alive.

The Dragons found a way on Friday night at Bloomfield Hills High School even if it is not one of their best nights.

Orion would end up winning 27-26 over the Blackhawks on their homecoming night and keeping their playoff hopes alive for another week.

The Dragons (4-3, 4-2 Red) were led by Matt Krause who scored two touchdowns both in the second half. His last score was the game winning score with 2:21 left in the game.

Zach Serzo would have the other touchdown run making the score 14-6 Orion.

Bloomfield Hills quarterback and Utica Eisenhower transfer Nate Emery was just incredible as both a passer and a runner. Emery would score two rushing touchdowns, one from five yards out, and one from two yards out. He would connect on a passing touchdown as well.

The Blackhawks (2-5, 2-4 Red) would lead 20-14 at half and 26-14 late into the third quarter. The Bloomfield Hills homecoming crowd went nuts the whole game.

The Orion defense had to make a couple of stands. They got a pick on Emery and then with the game still in the balance tackled the wide receiver of Bloomfield Hills down on the ground as time ran out. Orion also had an Emery fumble return for a touchdown by Sean Mercier to open up the scoring 7-0.

The Dragons will move onto next week with a home game against top ranked Clarkston (7-0, 6-0 Red) on Friday night.

OAA Picks: Week Seven.

Troy at 1 Clarkston: The Wolves did not look good against Troy Athens but then again Clarkston put in mostly their backups. Kurt Richardson was not happy last week but this week his team should have one more breeze game against a Colts team that has struggled all season long.

North Farmington at Adams: The Highlanders will likely miss the playoffs for the second time in three seasons but still have hope. This is a make or break game for North Farmington especially who they have next week, Harrison.

WIN OF THE NIGHT: Groves 36, Avondale 31: The Falcons had to survive a Yellow Jackets rally on Thursday night. Groves is now in the drivers seat in the Blue setting a showdown in two weeks with Farmington. For Avondale it’s about making the playoffs now, the division race is now gone.

TOUGH LOSS: Orion 40, Stoney Creek 21: The Dragons made it two for two against Stoney Creek (Soccer-won 1-0 and football tonight) and will have an opportunity to make three for three if they beat them in Volleyball Tuesday night. Anyway to football the Cougars defense was exposed tonight as it gave up the most points it has allowed this season (Clarkston 35 points.) The Dragons lost 36-7 last season in this game got a measure of revenge and had a big night from their running game. The schedule is tough for Stoney Creek, they still have to play West Bloomfield for their homecoming and that will be tough.

TEAM THAT NEEDS A HUG: Farmington 41, Berkley 13: The Bears were just exposed against the Falcons and it showed early and often. Farmington showed why they are one of the top teams in the Blue while Berkley’s top notched defense was exposed this week. The Bears must find a way to turn this around quick or this will be a long season.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME: Rochester 34, Royal Oak 0: The Falcons just scored more points in this game than in the previous five games this season (21 points.) This was a huge win for coach Erik Vernon and a horrible loss for the Ravens considering they have experience back for coach Tim Chapman. Rochester is now wearing black pants now which are interesting in seeing them.

3. West Bloomfield at 7. Oxford: The Wildcats could be in trouble in this game. The Lakers have proven they can beat anyone at any given time. Two weeks ago West Bloomfield destroyed Orion on the road and last week destroyed Bloomfield Hills. If that’s enough motivation for the Lakers it was Oxford that beat West Bloomfield and cost them a trip to the playoffs last season. Talk about irony.

5. Groves at 10. Berkley: This is a huge game for both teams. The Bears are trying to rebound after losing last week to Farmington and the Falcons are unbeaten heading into this match up. Groves has a lot of talent and hasn’t lost a beat this season. It should be an interesting match up this week.

Ferndale at Avondale: The Eagles are hot right now winning two straight and sits at 3-3. Ferndale will be going up against a Yellow Jackets team that lost two straight and is now 3-3. The winner of this game will be in great shape while the loser could be in deep trouble to make the playoffs.

North Farmington at Adams: The Raiders sit at 3-3 in this game heading to Rochester to take on the Highlanders. Adams schedule does lighten up but if they don’t win this game over North Farmington then they could miss the playoffs for the second time in three years.

Three Is the Magic Number.

Three is the magic number as you can see what happened in Rochester on Friday night.

Three times fireworks blew out.

Three times Matt Krause scored.

Three times Zach Serzo scored.

Orion and Stoney Creek are now three and three.

Three turnovers were created by a belined Dragons defense.

Orion managed to gain some revenge after losing 36-7 last season only to give Stoney Creek and its very good defense their most points they allowed all season in a 40-21 victory.

Krause would score the team’s opening touchdown from 12 yards out to go up 7-0 Dragons.

Krause would then strike again from 40 yards out for a touchdown but the extra point was missed and it was 13-0 Orion.

The Cougars would add its first touchdown of the game when Scott Reader caught a touchdown pass from four yards out by Jack Allen for a 13-7 Orion lead.

Stoney Creek would have one more opportunity to close out the half with the lead, Orion was hit with a pass interference call and the defense responded by stopping the Cougars offense and pushed Stoney Creek out of bounds causing a turnover on downs keeping the score 13-7 Dragons at half.

Serzo would then get involved scoring on a 29 yard touchdown catch from Max Horneffer but the two point try was missed, making the score 19-7 Orion.

The Dragons defense would get a controversial fumble and took advantage of it thanks to a Krause ten yard touchdown run for a 26-7 Orion lead.

Stoney Creek answered with a pass from Allen to Joe Platz from 14 yards out for a touchdown and a 26-14 hole heading to the fourth quarter.

Orion would then strike again as Serzo scored his second touchdown of the night when he ran the ball from 60 yards for a 33-14 Orion lead.

The Cougars would get another touchdown from the legs of Allen from six yards out for a 33-21 Orion lead and would get the onside kick making things interesting to say the least.

The Dragons defense made another stop causing Stoney Creek to go three and out.

Serzo would then add the final exclamation point going 80 yards making the score 40-21 Orion.

Krause would finish up the game with 204 yards and three touchdowns. Serzo would have 167 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns to go along with his 29 yard receiving touchdown.

The Dragons are now 3-3, 3-2 in the Red while the Cougars fall to 3-3, 2-3 in the Red. Orion would now play at Bloomfield Hills (2-4, 2-3 Red) on Friday night.

We’ll see what happens.

Dragons lose tough one to Clarkston Again.

For some strange reason the fifth ranked Dragons were in control most of the match on Thursday night in Clarkston.

However one bad call later the third ranked Wolves rallied and what would likely be their eighth straight Red title.

Clarkston came from two games down to stun Orion 20-25, 22-25, 25-18, 29-27, and 15-9.

The Dragons (30-5-2, 3-1 Red) won the first two games and were in control in the third game up 8-2. The Wolves (29-3, 4-0 Red) then outscored them 23-7 down the stretch to win game three.

Game four was the turning point, the difference from seeing Orion win over their long time rival for the first time since the 2011 State Semifinals or Clarkston winning seven of eight meetings over Orion.

The Dragons had a great start and was up 8-1 in the fourth game and was up 23-18 late but a bad call went the Wolves way and a 6-1 rally started tying the game up at 24-24.

After the game four win, Clarkston went on and won 15-9 in game five, winning the match 3-2.

The Dragons were led by Hannah Murdock’s 24 kills and three aces. Marley Redd had seven kills and two blocks. Kori Varney had 29 digs and four aces.

The Wolves were led by Taylor Dellinger’s 18 kills along with sophomore Abby Malinowski who had 17 kills while her sister Emily had 56 assists on the night.

This is a tough loss for Orion and coach Tony Scavada, they gave this one away. The Dragons had strong starts and were in the drivers seat the whole match only to see Clarkston take it from them. Orion must focus now on Stoney Creek before closing out the regular season against Troy and Farmington.  

This is a big win for Clarkston and coach Kelly Averall-Pinter. The Wolves now have confidence heading into the final three games of the regular season and already have wins over Seaholm, Bloomfield Hills, Stoney Creek, and Orion.

This is not over, districts loom in November and Clarkston will be the ones having to travel to Orion. The district draw is out and looking at it, it looks like Clarkston will have a tough road if things work itself out.

Yes the Wolves have had success in Orion but this is a different Dragons team at home in past years.

This has actually begun.

Ant's Thoughts on Farmington Football.

Winning season, yeah, yeah,

Not quite

As I look around the rest of the OAA, I notice some strange things going on in the other divisions especially in the Blue. While Royal Oak and Rochester are both winless in the vicious White, I see teams like Groves and Berkley both having successful seasons, Avondale is consistently good. I wonder how Groves and Berkley would do if they were up in the vicious White???

I’m not even talking about Farmington yet.

Farmington Football, the same program I saw in 2012 when Lake Orion went down there to play them. The same team who was up 18-0 at one point during their homecoming game. Then they whined and moaned after Lake Orion scored 43 unanswered points to win 43-18. The same team whose obnoxious parents were yelling at Orion kids to “Take a knee” and saying that LO as a whole is a “dirty program,”

Yep that team,

They have no business in the OAA Blue Division.

Why are they in it in the first place?

The OAA went through a realignment year and the divisions were based more out of enrollment rather than success. Farmington has one of the lower enrollment numbers and went 2-7 in the brutal White but it also went 6-3 in that same division in 2012 and one of the division criteria is records. Farmington certainly should not have went down a division based on last years record, if anything they should have stayed put

Farmington should be playing teams like Oak Park, Rochester Adams, and Southfield on a consistent basis not teams like Pontiac and Hazel Park. They have talent led by its strong senior class and will be pretty good, at least for the next two years. Farmington has rivalries with many of the OAA White teams especially Southfield, Oak Park, and North Farmington (whom I think like the team I mention below, they should play every year). In fact, Farmington should play those teams every year.

Notice that I didn’t mention Farmington Hills Harrison. The reason why I didn’t mention them is that Farmington does play them and every time they play, Harrison is 28-5 against Farmington and 9-2 since 2004. Farmington should be playing teams like Harrison, Oak Park, Southfield, and Rochester Adams. It is those teams that will make them better. It is the games the fans want to see, they want to see Farmington play the best possible competition it can. Yes, teams like Beverly Hills Groves, Berkley, Avondale, and Ferndale are good teams also but no offense to those teams, Farmington should not be playing with them.

The problem here is that every year Farmington wants to make the playoffs by any means necessary. The parents there control the asylum. Yes those same parents (not all of them but quite a bit of them) who feel like they are the show there. It’s sad, Farmington has a pretty decent team but when outside figures call the shots, the program is less successful. I almost feel bad for their coach but then again he allows this to happen and he has no plans or the intention to stop it. If it means playing in a weaker division, so be it.

Personally I lost a lot of respect for Farmington in 2012 especially in terms of what their parents did, the take a knee chants (instead of showing concern for their player who was injured), the woman yelling at the kids after the game only to be restrained and the subsequent posting by a Farmington parent and coach in which on the OAA blog  He bashed the entire Lake Orion Football Program and how it was ran. It’s a shame, that post was thankfully deleted but still it reflects the type of parents people deal with at Farmington.

The realization is Farmington will make the playoffs but most likely will play a very dangerous team (like Birmingham Brother Rice, Orchard Lake St. Marys, or even Farmington Hills Harrison again) in the first round of the playoffs. But I do hope that at the end of the season, the OAA has a meeting in which they should move Farmington back to the White and move Royal Oak down to the Blue. They should base it on competition level and watching both the White and Blue this year. They messed it up a little bit. I hope they get it right next year. 

OAA Picks: Week Six.

2. Oak Park at North Farmington: Raiders have experience on both sides of the football but problem is so does the Knights and Oak Park has played a more brutal schedule than North Farmington. DD/ANT PICK: OAK PARK 49, NORTH FARMINGTON 7.

Bloomfield Hills at 3. West Bloomfield: Lakers looked very impressive last week, going to be an easy tune up before next week when they go to Oxford. The Blackhawks beat Troy Athens by two points but West Bloomfield is a different animal. DD/ANT PICK: WEST BLOOMFIELD 42, BLOOMFIELD HILLS 0.

Adams at 4. Harrison: This is a must win game for the Highlanders considering their only tough game after this is the crossover. The Hawks are rolling after winning in triple overtime over Southfield. DD PICK: HARRISON 28, ADAMS 14. ANT PICK: HARRISON 28, ADAMS 21.

Avondale at 5. Groves: Yellow Jackets remember what happened last year in Beverly Hills, another chance for Avondale to right the wrong against the Falcons. DD PICK: AVONDALE 38, GROVES 31. ANT PICK: GROVES 35, AVONDALE 31.
