Dragons Basketball Update.

Written Friday January 29th at 10:50 AM

The Orion Girls Basketball team has been a team that has went through ups and downs lately. Their recent game was a disappointing 42-39 loss to Royal Oak which puts them in deep trouble in the White race.

The Dragons have been getting production from freshman Maddie Novak and senior Evelyn Wischmeyer but they haven't had that consistent third scorer. Orion will need to turn that around especially when we head to February and March.

The Dragon boys are getting there under coach Jim Manzo and it showed in the team's 77-72 win over Farmington last Friday night. Orion was screwed at Stoney Creek last Tuesday which the officiating was questionable in a 76-71 loss is trying to overcome the Fields and Prieskorn transfers and have managed to do so.

David Gomez has carried the load for the team this season but Noah Harris is starting to get it together along with Jaylen Wiggins and the team has gotten better each day. The progress should continue as the Blue season comes along.

We'll see what happens.

Dragons Football Update.

Written Friday January 29th, at 10:45 AM

The Orion Dragons football team did lose two very big pieces on their team as quarterback Caiden Prieskorn and running back Keith Fields transferred to other schools.

Prieskorn transferred to Orchard Lake St. Marys after a tough two years here at Orion coming in from Rochester Adams previously. Fields transferred to Waterford Mott because his cousin plays there.

Both were major contributions to the Dragons in 2015 but heading into 2016, the team will be much different.

We don't know what Dragon coach Chris Bell's team will look like but it will survive.

Why???

Orion has never been a team with top individuals, it's been a team first mentally. Also there is depth, you have 80-90 kids on the roster, many of them hungry for an opportunity.

The Dragons return a strong core on the offensive line led by Nick Novak and Jeff McCarty. Danny White returns as the lead back while Max Horneffer whom has quarterback experience will most likely be the quarterback. Roger White and Ryan Kolp lead the defense that struggled last season.

Orion had a strong JV class that went 8-1 in 2015 and expect them to make an impact right away.

Yes the Dragons have not made the playoffs in two years and have gone 8-10 since 2013 but there is always optimum. The mindset of the team must change that now this team is now the hunters and no longer the hunted.

This team could surprise folks in the Red.

It's their time to shine.
