Ever since 2011, the Dragons record in big games against the Clarkston Wolves has been 1-7. Orion has had good teams but have had either their league or season end at the hands of Clarkston.
Heading into Thursday’s match
with the eighth ranked Wolves, the Dragons were hoping to eliminate Clarkston
from the league race and end a three year losing streak in big games to the
Wolves.
They did just that.
The second ranked Dragons handed
Clarkston their eighth regular season loss with a 25-21, 25-17, and 26-24
victory over the Wolves at Orion. Clarkston (26-8-1, 2-2 Red) lost to Stoney Creek in
five games on Monday and this loss puts them out of the league race.
Orion (39-2) now has a one
game lead over Seaholm and Stoney Creek in the Red. The Dragons are 4-0 while
the Maples and Cougars are 3-1. Seaholm lost to Stoney Creek in four games on
Thursday night. The Dragons will travel to Birmingham next Thursday to play
Seaholm. Orion did beat the Cougars in three games last week in Rochester. The
Dragons will go to Oxford on Tuesday and play the Wildcats.
The Dragons are not
done with the Wolves however as they will play in tournaments and also will
play Clarkston in the pre-district at Waterford Kettering in November.
Courtney Wightman led the
Dragons with 12 kills, Natalie Wehner had ten kills. Kori Varney had 21 digs.
Leah Kalugar and Wren McCaulay had a combined 39 assists on the night.
There will be a new champion
in the Red this season. Clarkston had won eight straight league titles coming
into the season.
