Dragons Softball Lose Heartbreaker in Extra Innings to Hartland

Written Saturday June 8th, at 9:05 PM

Sometimes heartbreak happens in the worst of ways. It happened to the fourth ranked team in the state on Saturday afternoon.

The Hartland Eagles scored a three run home run in the top of the ninth inning in an error filled game to beat the Lake Orion Dragons 6-3 in the state semifinals at Rochester.

Hartland started the scoring in the top of the first by Abby Minkster getting an RBI scoring Sarah Tomlision making the score 1-0. The Eagles got another run in the top of the fourth to go up 2-0.

Lake Orion answered with back to back home runs by Alicia Gronowski and Kayla Knoblock to tie the score 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Hartland answered in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly to get itself a 3-2 lead.

The Dragons answered Hartland’s score on an pop fly by Gronowski and an error by the Center Fielder to tie the score 3-3 and then they went to extras.

Hartland then answered in the ninth by Tomlision, she singled in one and then an error and scored the third run to give the Eagles a 6-3 lead in the ninth. The Dragons could not answer after that.

The Dragons conclude its softball season with a 32-5 record, a Red and district championship for coach Joe Woitaya and three wins over arch rival Clarkston. Lake Orion does return a good core back next season and a possible run could be in the future.
