Ant's Take on Dragons Football Program.

Written Sunday September 28th, at 12:15 AM

Lake Orion Football.

How did it come down to this? How is this team 2-3 when it easily can be 4-1?

What is going on with the program?

Well, there are several things. We no longer are in an era where Lake Orion, Clarkston, Rochester Adams, and Farmington Hills Harrison controlled the shots when it came to OAA dominance. We are now in an era where enrollment plays a factor when it comes to division play. Many of the towns Lake Orion plays (such as Oxford, Clarkston, and West Bloomfield) are open enrollment which means kids can play from other districts, given that they have to sit out a year unless they live in district which means they can play right away. In a closed enrollment, if you live in the district, you can play. Lake Orion is gradually starting to become an open enrollment but for now it is a closed enrollment.

You also have to give credit where credit is due. For several years, it has always been Lake Orion and Clarkston dominating the OAA hierarchy with hardly any competition. With the exception of Southfield, Rochester Adams, and Farmington Hills Harrison (each of then have had consistent programs but were in the lower division, the top division has always been a two team race. Now you have teams like Oxford, West Bloomfield, and Stoney Creek that are in and for different reasons. With West Bloomfield, they have always been in the top division but have struggled. They have now benefited from getting transfers mostly from Pontiac but also they have some home grown athletes that they are using to their advantage. With Stoney Creek, they always get the best with what they have; they are one of the blue collar hard working teams and play hard. Oxford, well, they got what they wanted, to be in the same division with Lake Orion and Clarkston. Oxford is also benefiting from the transfer rule but with the time possession power football they play, it counters depth, got to give them credit for that. The reality is those three teams got better and will be decent for a while. Also I’m not talking about Clarkston either, they will (not could) will eventually go through what Lake Orion is going through sooner than later.

You also have to look at the direction of the program, who is the blame for what is happening?

The coaches?

The players?

The staff?

The Alumni?

The Lake Orion Culture?

Actually all the above

Lake Orion Football has always prided itself on consistency and success, not just as great players but as great men (and in a few cases women). Lake Orion has always been known for is a great running game, great passing game, great quarterback play, great defense, depth, and especially physical football. To be a championship team, you must have all of those things. Lake Orion often have about 85-90 kids come out for the team every year, in all three of its levels (Varsity, JV, and freshman). The number has gone down a little bit because of the concussion policy but still, when your number is called (whether it be for an injury or something else), you should be ready to play. Over the years, there has been a massive drop-off between the first string and the second string, that can’t happen. Teams who are deep do very well in both the regular season and especially the playoffs.

At Lake Orion, as a fan and alum, you expect your team to win every game, well at least the games you are supposed to win. Its part of the culture in this town, you expect to win every game, especially at home. When you don’t win, there is cause for concern. People ask what is going on, questions come up. As a player, its important to avoid those people, yes you hear it but at the same time, it’s important to stay committed to the task at hand.

It is true. You can’t deny Lake Orion’s struggles. Over the last few years, Lake Orion has benefited from great offense and great running back play especially along the lines of power and jet but when teams figure you out, you become too predictable, that falls on the coaches who have to change it up. Make some pass plays, do something they don’t expect you to do, go along those lines. That has to do with quarterback and how much the coaches trust the quarterback. Lake Orion in the last three years has had three one year starters. It’s a risky policy, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Quarterbacks (much less any player) struggle when they don’t have the confidence of the coach. Also on offense, you have to be multi demonical, not one demonical. Throughout the years, there hasn’t been a true passing game, opting to go for the run and despite having some tall receivers who are more than capable of catching the football. As I said, a lot of that involves coach’s confidence and comes down to trusting the quarterback.

One of the weak points LO has had has been the defense. First thing’s first, Coach Tooley is an excellent coach. One of the, if not the best defensive coach in the state, he’s proven that. One of themes Orion talks about is Orion Tough, you have to be physical, have to be relentless especially on the line. You also have to have a strong secondary. LO has struggled on this side of the ball. It is not lack of effort but simply not making the “right” plays, being afraid to make mistakes especially costly ones. Also not setting their will or establishing who they are. Traditional LO defenses have often set their will on people, making opponents afraid and reluctant to play LO. It starts with the defense. The same can be said about special teams, it’s all about returning to the traditional LO roots, physical, smart decision making relentless football.

A lot of people are going to blame injuries, youth, and ah course the schedule. Injuries happen but as I mentioned earlier, players have to step up, take advantage of the opportunity and do your best. A lot have said, LO is young. It’s true but it is not an excuse, being young is simply that young. No matter the class, you should still play physical, smart decision making relentless football. People are going to blame the coach. If you are a player who is struggling with this, sit down with the coach, ask him what you should do to get better, don’t moan, groan, or do nothing about it. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

Lastly, people are going to blame the schedule, its understandable that there are only three home games this year and that people are upset. Listen with the exception of week one (which Coach Bell set up with Scott Merchant, Coaches good friend and Chippewa Valley’s head coach), LO didn’t set up the schedule, Oxford’s Athletic Director set it up. We all thought we would get both Oxford and Stoney Creek at home but it didn’t work out. Did I want to play CV week one, eh not really but the schedule is what it is, got to play it. It is true the schedule toughens a team up but still, there were better games out there.

A lot comes down to mental but Lake Orion has got to get back to what it is known for. Yes, they are 2-3 but at this point, it is not about the playoffs, it is about reestablishing your identity and what Lake Orion Football is truly about, not just in the classroom but on the field on Friday Night.

OAA Recap: Week Five.

Written Saturday September 27th, at 11:00 PM

Dragons Den Top 10:

1. Clarkston
2. Oak Park
3. West Bloomfield
4. Harrison
5. Groves
6. Berkley
7. Southfield
8. Oxford
9. Farmington
10. Stoney Creek

WIN OF THE NIGHT: Ferndale 34, Lathrup 26: The Eagles got a huge win and could be back in the playoff race. This is a tough loss for the Chargers and playoffs don't look good. Ferndale has now won two games and if they win out then this team could be a force to be a recon with.

TOUGH LOSS: Harrison 34, Southfield 27 (3 O/T): The Jays were in the game until the very end against the Hawks. They forced overtime and went toe to toe with Harrison but this was a tough one for Southfield. The road team in this series has won four of the last five meetings in this rivalry.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME: West Bloomfield 39, Lake Orion 0: The Dragons looked awful on Friday night against a very good Lakers team but not to score a point for the first time since 2003, lose on homecoming for the first time since 2000, worse loss since 1998 when Rockford beat Orion 48-7 in the state semifinals. Orion will likely miss the playoffs for the first time since 2000. This could be one of the worst Dragons teams in Lake Orion history.

TEAM THAT NEEDS A HUG: Avondale: The Yellow Jackets for the second straight season lost a heart-breaker to the Bears except this time it was in double overtime. Last year it was 34-31, this year it was 21-20. Berkley is in good shape to make the playoffs. Avondale is as well but a tough road will await both of these teams.

Last Week Games:
1. Clarkston 42, 8. Oxford 14
2. Oak Park 34, Adams 10
3. West Bloomfield 39, Orion 0
4. Harrison 34, 7. Southfield 27 (2 O/T)
5. Groves 62, Hazel Park 0
6. Berkley 21, Avondale 20 (3 O/T)
9. Farmington 56, Pontiac 13
10. Stoney Creek 9, Troy 0
Bloomfield Hills 37, Troy Athens 35
Ferndale 34, Lathrup 26
North Farmington 35, Royal Oak 7
Seaholm 41, Rochester 14

This Week Games:
1. Clarkston at Troy Athens
Bloomfield Hills at 3. West Bloomfield
Orion at 10. Stoney Creek
8. Oxford at Troy
2. Oak Park at North Farmington
Adams at 4. Harrison
Rochester at Royal Oak
7. Southfield at Seaholm
Avondale at 5. Groves
6. Berkley at 9. Farmington
Pontiac at Ferndale
Lathrup at Hazel Park

Top Games Next Week:

6. Berkley at 9. Farmington: The Bears ride a strong defense into Farmington to take on a Falcons team loaded with athletes. Berkley’s defense will give Farmington problems. Farmington’s athleticism will give Berkley problems. The Falcons have played a tougher schedule than the Bears and it could very well be the difference.

Avondale at 5. Groves: This is a revenge match for the Yellow Jackets after what happened last season in Beverly Hills. This will be the first major test for the Falcons since Seaholm. Avondale will be motivated for this one. Groves will be ready as well.

7. Southfield at Seaholm: This is a rematch of last season’s 14-13 shocking win by the Maples over the Blue Jays. Southfield is also furious after losing in triple overtime last week to Harrison. These two teams are different and that's key.

Adams at 4. Harrison: The Highlanders are on life support as well, the Stoney Creek loss is hurting Adams right now. The Hawks had a huge win over Southfield in triple overtime last week. Harrison is riding high with confidence right now.

Orion at 10. Stoney Creek: The Dragons are on life support after getting destroyed 39-0 by West Bloomfield at home last week. Lake Orion lost 36-7 last season at Stoney Creek. The Cougars feature one of the best defenses in the league and could end the Dragons playoff hopes this week.

We'll see what happens folks.

Lakers give Dragons first Homecoming Loss since 2000, and worse beating since 1998.

Written Saturday September 27th, at 9:30 AM

The lowest of lows hit Lake Orion on Friday night.

No defense, no offense, no special teams, no heart, no nothing.

The Dragons were just dominated on their homecoming, losing for the first time since 2000 with a 39-0 loss to West Bloomfield.

This is the Lakers first victory over Lake Orion since 1982.

The loss was the worst since losing 48-7 to Rockford in the 1988 State semifinals for this program and is now in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time in 14 years.

Lake Orion (2-3, 2-2 Red) couldn’t get anything right, in which included a kickoff punt recovered by West Bloomfield (4-1, 3-1 Red), a punt return by Michael King for a touchdown, gave up slant passes for touchdowns, couldn’t handle the speed on the field, and also a Lakers defense that was very good.

The Dragons also couldn’t stop King or Tristian Jackson whom also had big nights for the Lakers.

Lake Orion needs to take things one at a time and now faces a very good Stoney Creek (3-2, 2-2 Red) team whom beat the Dragons 36-7 last season back at Rochester.

Dragons Ride the Sargent over Maples.

Written Wednesday September 24th, at 9:05 PM

Orion freshman Danielle Sargent has had her ups and downs this season but being the new girl on the block means something, something strong.

Sargent was huge especially in games one and two against fifth ranked Birmingham Seaholm on Tuesday night as she had 17 kills as the seventh ranked Dragons got a bit of revenge after last season’s horrible loss in Birmingham with a 25-15, 25-16, 19-25, 26-24 victory Tuesday night.

This game featured two teams that had been winning tournaments lately and ranked in the Michigan High School Volleyball Coach's Association poll, Seaholm won three of them (Macomb Dakota, Novi, and Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes) while Orion has won two of them this season (Flushing and Portage Central.)

Hannah Murdock led Orion with 20 kills, Marley Redd had six kills, and Kory Varney had 25 digs.

After dominating the first two games, Orion (29-4-2, 2-0 Red) started to play tight while Seaholm coach Heather Lippert said that her team wasn’t having fun and not playing loose.

When the third game started, the Maples played loose and were having fun.

Led by Annie Schecther who had 18 kills and 16 digs, Seaholm took control, led 10-3 in the third game.

The fourth game was crazy, the Dragons dominated first then the Maples went on a run and with the score tied 22-22 it became a battle back and fourth.

Madison Martin played an inspired game with a blister on her hand with 41 digs while Paige Zywick had 16 assists.

Seaholm’s (26-7-2, 0-2 Red) loss pretty much takes them out of the Red race, considering that their other league loss was to Clarkston in four games.

Orion will face fourth ranked Clarkston next Thursday at Clarkston but first will host Bloomfield Hills on Monday at Orion.

OAA Picks: Week Five

Written Wednesday September 24th, at 9:00 PM

1. Clarkston at 2. Oxford: This game maybe for the Red title. The Wildcats won last week 21-14 over Lake Orion and this is their homecoming game. The Wolves beat Stoney Creek 35-14 last week. Winner is in the drivers seat in the Red. DD PICK: OXFORD 28, CLARKSTON 21. ANT PICK: CLARKSTON 31, OXFORD 24.

6. Harrison at 3. Southfield: The Blue Jays and Hawks square off again in a rivalry match up with the road team winning four of the last five meetings. Question will be will Javon Shaw throw against Southfield’s athletic secondary? We’ll find out. DD PICK: SOUTHFIELD 28, HARRISON 20. ANT PICK: SOUTHFIELD 28, HARRISON 14.

Adams at 4. Oak Park: The Highlanders lost to Oak Park last season at Rochester, now the game is in Knight Valley and Adams may have no answer for Juan Hernandez. The Highlanders need this game bad. DD PICK: OAK PARK 35, ADAMS 7. ANT PICK: OAK PARK 49, ADAMS 21.

5. West Bloomfield at Orion: The Lakers are rolling at 3-1 and is very talented led by Tristian Jackson and Michael King but they have something to prove this week and put 41 on Clarkston two weeks ago. The Dragons are struggling at 2-2 and is in must win mode here on out. Lake Orion hasn’t lost a Homecoming game since 2000 and hasn’t missed the playoffs since 2000. This game will be a shootout. DD PICK: ORION 63, WEST BLOOMFIELD 56. ANT PICK: ORION 38, WEST BLOOMFIELD 28.

Hazel Park at 7. Groves: Mark this game as an easy tune up for the Falcons. DD PICK: GROVES 49, HAZEL PARK 0. ANT PICK: GROVES 38, HAZEL PARK 0.

8. Berkley at 10. Avondale: Last season was 34-31 Bears whom finished 3-6. The Yellow Jackets remember Homecoming, it was a nightmare. This game will be close again. DD PICK: AVONDALE 21, BERKLEY 16. ANT PICK: BERKLEY 28, AVONDALE 24.

9. Farmington at Pontiac: Mark this game as an easy tune up for the Falcons. DD PICK: FARMINGTON 56, PONTIAC 0. ANT PICK: FARMINGTON 38, PONTIAC 3.

Stoney Creek at Troy: The Colts only scored six points last week against Bloomfield Hills. They have a defense but the Cougars have a running game and a defense. DD PICK: STONEY CREEK 14, TROY 6. ANT PICK: STONEY CREEK 48, TROY 3.

Royal Oak at North Farmington: Ravens still have no chance in this one against the Raiders. Royal Oak has been outmatched lately and North Farmington has an experienced defense. DD PICK: NORTH FARMINGTON 35, ROYAL OAK 7. ANT PICK: NORTH FARMINGTON 31, ROYAL OAK 0.

Troy Athens at Bloomfield Hills: This game is interesting but looking at it, too much Nate Emery against a horrible Red Hawks defense. DD PICK: BLOOMFIELD HILLS 35, TROY ATHENS 21. ANT PICK: TROY ATHENS 14, BLOOMFIELD HILLS 13.

Ferndale at Lathrup: When looking at this game, this is a sleeper match up. Both teams are 1-3 and in need of a win. One will get it this week. DD PICK: FERNDALE 21, LATHRUP 14. ANT PICK: FERNDALE 24, LATHRUP 14.

Seaholm at Rochester: The Falcons are struggling, only seven points in four games. It might not get better against a Maples team hat still has Tommy Sheppard at quarterback. This will be a long night in Rochester. DD PICK: SEAHOLM 31, ROCHESTER 0. ANT PICK: SEAHOLM 14, ROCHESTER 13.

OAA Recap Week Four.

Written Saturday September 20th, at 12:00 AM

Top 10:

1. Clarkston
2. Oxford
3. Southfield
4. Oak Park
5. West Bloomfield
6. Harrison
7. Groves
8. Berkley
9. Farmington
10. Avondale

BIG WIN OF THE NIGHT: Oxford 21, Orion 14: The Wildcats and Dragons were evenly matched Friday night. Oxford took advantage of three defensive stands in rout to recapturing the Double O Trophy for the second time in four seasons. Orion now stands at 2-2 and must win next week to keep playoff hopes alive.

TOUGH LOSS: Ferndale: The Eagles had promising hopes but losing 55-14 to Farmington at home hurts. Ferndale must regroup and focus on Lathrup, the Eagles maybe the toughest 1-3 team in the state right now.

TEAM THAT NEEDS A HUG: Rochester: Things have been tough for coach Eric Vernon lately. The Falcons have only scored seven points in four games. They were shutout 53-0 by Oak Park, now this is the third opponent to shut the Falcons out this season.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Bloomfield Hills 21, Troy 6: The Colts were at home for the first time this season and they allow 21 points to a team that hasn’t been in the Red long. I didn’t think it would get this bad in Troy, especially with Stoney Creek visiting next week.

Last Week’s Games:

1. Clarkston 35, Stoney Creek 14
2. Oxford 21, Orion 14
3. Southfield 51, North Farmington 7
4. Oak Park 53, Rochester 0
5. West Bloomfield 45, Troy Athens 3
6. Harrison 42, Seaholm 7
7. Groves 50, Pontiac 0
8. Berkley 42, Hazel Park 0
9. Farmington 55, Ferndale 14
10. Avondale 33, Lathrup 10
Adams 48, Royal Oak 17
Bloomfield Hills 21, Troy 6

This Week’s Games:

1. Clarkston at 2. Oxford
6. Harrison at 3. Southfield
Adams at 4. Oak Park
5. West Bloomfield at Orion
Hazel Park at 7. Groves
8. Berkley at 10. Avondale
9. Farmington at Pontiac
Stoney Creek at Troy
Royal Oak at North Farmington
Troy Athens at Bloomfield Hills
Seaholm at Rochester
Ferndale at Lathrup

Top Games Next Week:

1. Clarkston at 2. Oxford: This is clearly a trap game for the Wolves. It’s the Wildcats homecoming and they remember losing 30-27 in the playoffs last season. Oxford is clearly tough on it’s home field and this will be the first time that Clarkston has visited the blue turf. The Wildcats are riding high after beating Orion 21-14 last week. The Wolves have their hands full this week.

6. Harrison at 3. Southfield: The Blue Jays and Hawks have had classics. Southfield won at home last season snapping a streak where the road team has won in this series. Harrison will be motivated but the question will be is can Javon Shaw pass against the division one recruit secondary that the Blue Jays have???

Adams at 4. Oak Park: This is a huge game for the Highlanders considering it’s playoff hopes ride in this one. The Knights are unbeaten and will have Adams at home, last season Oak Park went into Rochester and beat the Highlanders. Can Adams return the favor?

5. West Bloomfield at Orion: The Lakers are riding high after beating Troy Athens 45-3, now they will step in to the roll as a rare favorite heading into the Dragons game. Lake Orion lost a tough 21-14 game to Oxford and could be in danger of losing it’s first homecoming game since 2000.

8. Berkley at 10. Avondale: The Bears went into Auburn Hills and stunned the Yellow Jackets 34-31 on it’s homecoming last season. Now Berkley returns to Avondale where Josh Holloman awaits but the Bears defense has only allowed 30 points through four games.

Dragons Volleyball off to a good note

Written Saturday September 20th, at 12:00 AM

The Orion Volleyball team got off to a good start in Red play by sweeping the Oxford Wildcats 25-21, 25-15, and 25-17 Thursday night at Orion.

Orion was led by Natalie Wehner’s 15 kills along with Hannah Murdock who had a good performance.

Kori Varney had 16 digs to lead Lake Orion while Nicole Wehner has taking over the setters’ role which was left by Rachel Giwa.

The Dragons (22-3-1, 1-0 Red) was ranked ninth in the state will play this weekend in a loaded pool at Portage Central and then return to Red play and await the fourth ranked Birmingham Seaholm Maples, who was beat by sixth ranked Clarkston 13-25, 25-16,  22-25, 23-25 at Orion on Tuesday night.

We’ll see what happens. Watch OAA Now for complete coverage on ONTV or click OAA Now on the ONTV and YouTube page

Dragons Fall to the Wildcats.

Written Saturday September 20th, at 12:00 AM

In one instinct the Double O Trophy is in your grasp and the next moment it's gone. That’s what happened to the Dragons on Friday night in Oxford.

The Wildcats (4-0, 3-0 Red) ended up taking the trophy for the second time in four seasons in a 21-14 win over Lake Orion.

The key play was a 65 yard touchdown run by Shawn Stonerauch giving Oxford the 21-14 lead late in the fourth quarter.

Another player that was instrumental was Glacier Wallington.

Wallington had two touchdown runs, one on a bootleg from 28 yards for a 7-0 Oxford lead and a dive into the endzone from five yards out for a 14-7 Wildcats lead.

Lake Orion (2-2. 2-1 Red) meanwhile had some bright moments of it’s own as Logan Shadia powered his way into the endzone for a 7-7 tie at the half. The Dragons would also respond in the fourth on a eight yard pass from Cameron Kostiz to Nick Fox tying the score 14-14.

What hurt the Dragons was they had six chances to score in the endzone, two were from the Wildcats one yard line, all of them ended up in zero points. Also Lake Orion lost Jaylen Wiggins to due an chest injury in the third quarter.

Lake Orion will move onto next week’s homecoming match with West Bloomfield (3-1, 2-1 Red) for its homecoming. The Lakers are a dangerous team and will attempt to give the Dragons its first homecoming loss since 2000.

It’s time to rise up if you want to make the playoffs, Orion.

OAA Picks: Week Four

Written Tuesday September 16th, at 10:30 PM

1. Clarkston at 9. Stoney Creek: Kurt Richardson remembers the situation last season when he witnessed the Cougars shock Lake Orion 36-7. The Wolves will have their first road game of the season when they go to Rochester. This will be a tough test for Clarkston, Stoney Creek will be ready for this one. DD PICK: CLARKSTON 31, STONEY CREEK 28. ANT PICK: CLARKSTON 35, STONEY CREEK 32.

7. Orion at 2. Oxford: This maybe the game of the week for the Double O Trophy. This game features top players on both sides. The Dragons have Cameron Kotisch, Matt Krause, Keith Fields, and Zach Serzo. The Wildcats have Dallas Truitt, Scott Studenbach, and Glacier Wallington. Oxford likes the pound the rock while Orion likes the quick strike approach. Expect this game to be close and very physical. Hearts will be pounding. DD PICK: ORION 17, OXFORD 14. ANT PICK: ORION 28, OXFORD 14.

3. Southfield at North Farmington: The Blue Jays put up 62 points last week against Royal Oak. This is a huge game for the Raiders who are 2-1 but it won’t be enough to beat Southfield. DD PICK: SOUTHFIELD 42, NORTH FARMINGTON 21. ANT PICK: SOUTHFIELD 49, NORTH FARMINGTON 3.

Rochester at 4. Oak Park:  I can’t think of anything positive for the Falcons, they scored a touchdown last week but won’t win this week in Knight Valley. John Kelly may as well get ready for next week when Adams comes a calling. DD PICK: OAK PARK 77, ROCHESTER 0. ANT PICK: OAK PARK 70, ROCHESTER 0.

Troy Athens at 5. West Bloomfield: The Lakers lost a tough one last week 55-41 to Clarkston. The Red Hawks were a disaster last week against Oxford allowing 56 points. Troy Athens is in deep trouble in this one. DD PICK: WEST BLOOMFIELD 56, TROY ATHENS 7. ANT PICK: WEST BLOOMFIELD 35, TROY ATHENS 14.

6. Harrison at Seaholm: The Hawks were shut out for the first time since 2004 when Orion won 19-0 when they lost 27-0 to Oak Park. The Maples were destroyed last week by Adams 34-7. Seaholm looks comfortable at home but this is a ticked off team they are going up against in Harrison. DD PICK: HARRISON 34, SEAHOLM 7. ANT PICK: HARRISON 24, SEAHOLM 21.

Pontiac at 8. Groves: The Falcons return home after winning two critical games over Ferndale and Lathrup. The Phoenix snapped a 13 game losing streak by beating Hazel Park 17-0 last week. A dose of reality is coming here for Pontiac. DD PICK: GROVES 35, PONTIAC 7. ANT PICK: GROVES 38, PONTIAC 0.

10. Berkley at Hazel Park: The Bears are riding high at 3-0 and has a stout defense. The Vikings have no chance after losing last week to Pontiac 17-0. DD PICK: BERKLEY 63, HAZEL PARK 0. ANT PICK: BERKLEY 42, HAZEL PARK 0.

Lathrup at Avondale: The Yellow Jackets were humiliated last week 35-0 at Farmington but now they return home to face a Chargers team that has struggled as of late. Avondale will be ready for this one but so will Lathrup. DD PICK: AVONDALE 28, LATHRUP 7. ANT PICK: AVONDALE 32, LATHRUP 31.

Farmington at Ferndale: The Falcons had a huge win over Avondale last week 35-0. The Eagles lost a tough game to Berkley 20-14 in double overtime. Farmington has better athletes and better players. Ferndale will be competitive in this game as well. DD PICK: FERNDALE 24, FARMINGTON 21. ANT PICK: FARMINGTON 28, FERNDALE 14.

Adams at Royal Oak: Ryan Irish returns to Royal Oak but as an assistant coach. The Ravens defense has been awful lately and will now have to deal with an Highlanders offense that put up 34 points last week against Seaholm. DD PICK: ADAMS 70, ROYAL OAK 0. ANT PICK: ADAMS 63, ROYAL OAK 0.

Bloomfield Hills at Troy: The Colts have their first home game of the season against the Blackhawks. Both teams have star players with Troy having Eric Papagernda while Bloomfield Hills has Nate Emery. This game will be interesting. DD PICK: TROY 28, BLOOMFIELD HILLS 17. ANT PICK: TROY 21, BLOOMFIELD HILLS 17.

Dragons beat Colts but was ugly.

Written Saturday September 13th, at 1:05 PM

The first home game of the season wasn’t so brisk to start with especially looking at the score on Friday night at halftime.

The score read 7-7, Matt Krause was shut down, and the Colts had all the momentum.

Until Jaylen Wiggins blocked a field goal attempt late in the second quarter.

Lake Orion took off by scoring 28 of it’s 35 unanswered points in the second half. The rally started on a huge return by Zach Serzo taking the ball deep into Troy territory. It would be Keith Fields who scored the Dragons next touchdown making the score 14-7 Orion.

The Dragons lead by Krause had 121 yards and two touchdowns, both in the second half. Fields had a touchdown and Serzo had two touchdowns (one rushing and one receiving) to lead the Lake Orion ground attack. Cameron Kostich was three for three with 85 yards and a touchdown pass.

The Colts was led by running back Erik Paperanda who had a touchdown.

Lake Orion (2-1, 2-0 Red) will move on and take on Oxford (3-0, 2-0 Red) next week. We’ll see what happens.

HUGE WIN: Clarkston 55, West Bloomfield 41: The Wolves and Lakers were tied 34-34 heading to the fourth quarter, only to see Clarkston outscore West Bloomfield 21-7 in the final frame. This game went back and fourth but the Wolves found a way to keep their season unbeaten in tact.

TOUGH LOSS: Oak Park 27, Harrison 0: The Hawks were shut out for the first time since losing 19-0 to Orion in 2004. The Knights were motivated since allowing 60 points to Harrison last season. The Hawks were shut down in all phases by Oak Park’s defense. Harrison must regroup and play Seaholm next week.

TEAM THAT NEEDS A HUG: Ferndale: The Eagles were neck and neck with the Bears and went to double overtime at Hurley Field, only to see Berkley win 20-14. Ferndale now sits a 1-2, a tough deceptive 1-2 and plays Farmington next.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME: Troy Athens: The Red Hawks are now in this section where Adams was at. Troy Athens allowed 56 points to an Oxford team (lost 56-20) that pounds the rock and just ran all over the Red Hawks. Now Troy Athens has to go to West Bloomfield to face an angry Lakers team.

Next Week’s Games:

1. Clarkston at 9. Stoney Creek
7. Orion at 2. Oxford
3. Southfield at North Farmington
Rochester at 4. Oak Park
Troy Athens at 5. West Bloomfield
6. Harrison at Seaholm
Pontiac at 8. Groves
10. Berkley at Hazel Park
Lathrup at Avondale
Bloomfield Hills at Troy
Adams at Royal Oak

Top Four Games next week:

7. Orion at 2. Oxford: When looking at this game you got the battle of two good running backs between Scott Studenbach and Matt Krause but the key is Glacier Wallington vs Cameron Kotsich. Last season Wallington ran all over the Dragons but it was Orion who survived 35-30 after a Jaylen Wiggins pick sealed the game. The Dragons were the last team to win on the blue turf last season and the Wildcats haven’t forgotten. Expect this game to be close.

1. Clarkston at 9. Stoney Creek: The Wolves are riding with all the momentum in beating West Bloomfield last week but now will meet a very good defense in the Cougars. This game is a trap game for Clarkston. Stoney Creek has always gotten up for the big games especially at home. Just ask Orion and Adams that question. Could there be fireworks be in store??? Last season, the Wolves beat the Cougars 35-0 and put running clock on them. The key is can Stoney Creek muster enough offense to keep it’s defense off the field and limit the big play Clarkston offense that awaits them.

Farmington at Ferndale: The Falcons are rolling since beating Avondale 35-0 last week and now will focus its attention to an Eagles team that has lost two tough games (Groves and Berkley) in the last two weeks. Farmington better be careful of a letdown game and this game could be it especially with Berkley looming in two weeks. Ferndale will give Farmington a battle but the depth is a question for coach Eric Royal’s Eagles.

Bloomfield Hills at Troy: This is a huge game for both teams considering that they both need this game to stay relevant, both are 0-3 coming in. This will also be Troy’s first home game of the season and they feature Eric Paperaganda while Bloomfield Hills features Nate Emery. The Blackhawks have played a much tougher schedule than the Colts but that Sterling Heights Stevenson game could be doing wonders since they shocked Chippewa Valley last week.

Games and News that shocked me around the State.

I’m shocked that Chippewa Valley sits at 1-2 since losing 21-7 to Sterling Heights Stevenson at home. The Big Reds now sit at 1-2 and still has to play Utica Eisenhower and Warren Mott. Chippewa Valley beat Orion and looked good on offense but this is a huge setback for them and now they sit 0-2 in the MAC Red.

Speaking of Utica Eisenhower, they lose 17-16 at Sweinhart Field to Macomb L’Anse Creuse North. The Eagles were up 16-0 after the first quarter and stopped scoring that’s what happened here. The Crusaders (1-2, 1-1 MAC Red) scored 17 unanswered points to send Utica Eisenhower to 1-2 and they still have to play Macomb Dakota, Romeo, and Chippewa Valley. Ouch.

I didn’t think that Walled Lake Central had it in them to beat Walled Lake Northern in a 47-28 win over their rival to the north. That game could have went either way but a huge win for the Vikings over the Knights.

I’m disappointed with Detroit Cass Tech quarterback Jayru Campbell for what he allegedly did on Friday. He was released from jail after serving 57 days and four hours after he was released he was arrested again for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend over a phone and witnessed in front of other students. Campbell is now charged with unarmed robbery, assault with intent to do bodily harm, and domestic violence and assault. Here was a guy who was just released from jail for body slamming a school security guard. He also punched a Novi Detroit Catholic Central player last year after a 28-0 loss to the Shamrocks at Troy Athens. It's looking more and more like jail didn't teach Campbell a lesson and looks likely if convicted that he would serve some more time in jail.

OAA Picks Week Three.

Written Wednesday September 10th, at 2:00 PM

Hello everyone, I haven’t been feeling well or the greatest but anyway here are my picks.

5. West Bloomfield at 1. Clarkston: When looking at this game, the Lakers will have a lot of athletes on display in this game. The Wolves survived Macomb Dakota and blew out Bloomfield Hills last week. Clarkston is a pistol team while West Bloomfield is a wishbone team. This will be West Bloomfield’s first test to prove that they belong with the best of the Red. This game will be closer than the experts think. DD PICK: CLARKSTON 27, WEST BLOOMFIELD 24. ANT PICK: CLARKSTON 45, WEST BLOOMFIELD 23.

6. Oak Park at 2. Harrison: Last season’s game was 60-52 Hawks in Farmington and now these two teams return to the scene of crazy game. The Knights have something to prove and they have been tested this season when they played Detroit Cass Tech at Wayne State. Harrison hasn’t been tested yet and it will show in this game. DD PICK: OAK PARK 28, HARRISON 21. ANT PICK: OAK PARK 49, HARRISON 41.

Royal Oak at 3. Southfield: This is such a bad match up for coach Tim Chapman’s Ravens. Royal Oak has allowed 61 points in the last two games and have been outscored by that number since they scored an opening season field goal. The Blue Jays destroyed Adams 35-0 last week and lost a tough one 21-19 at Wayne State to Orchard Lake St. Marys. This game will get ugly quick that the Southfield star secondary could take the second half off. DD PICK: SOUTHFIELD 56, ROYAL OAK 0. ANT PICK: SOUTHFIELD 42, ROYAL OAK 0.

4. Oxford at Troy Athens: This is a trap game for the Wildcats knowing that they face Lake Orion and Clarkston the next two weeks. This will be Oxford’s first road game of the season and not wearing their blue jerseys and wearing their plain whites. The Red Hawks, Missouri spread attack will give the Wildcats defense problems but the question will be is can the defense be up to the challenge against Oxford's pound the rock offense. DD PICK: TROY ATHENS 28, OXFORD 21. ANT PICK: OXFORD 17, TROY ATHENS 14.

Troy at 7. Orion: The Dragons have the first of it’s three home games this season against a Colts team that gave up 41 points to West Bloomfield last week. Troy is challenged on offense only scoring three points and we aren’t even talking about Matt Krause yet. Orion will roll in this game getting ready for a tough three game stretch against Oxford, Stoney Creek, and West Bloomfield. DD PICK: ORION 42, TROY 0. ANT PICK: ORION 35, TROY 3.

8. Avondale at Farmington: This game could decide the Blue when looking at this game but Berkley, Groves, and Ferndale will have a strong say about that. The Yellow Jackets though haven’t been tested yet feature the best running back Farmington will see in Josh Holloman. The Falcons will feature the best quarterback/wide receiver duo that Avondale has seen in Kyle Collins and Desmond Kirpatrick. This game will be close but leaning bees. DD PICK: AVONDALE 31, FARMINGTON 21. ANT PICK: FARMINGTON 28, AVONDALE 24.

9. Groves at Lathrup: Last week the Falcons beat a good Eagles team on the road. Now they get to play a Chargers team who didn’t look good against Farmington last week. Groves is the dark horse in the Blue and will show why in this one in front of one of the best bands in Oakland County. DD PICK: GROVES 35, LATHRUP 14: ANT PICK: GROVES 25, LATHRUP 14.

10. Stoney Creek at Bloomfield Hills: The Cougars lost a heartbreaker last week to Oxford and have questions some on offense. The Blackhawks have played two tough opponents in Walled Lake Northern and Clarkston. Stoney Creek will be an interesting team to watch in this game especially defensibly. DD PICK: STONEY CREEK 28, BLOOMFIELD HILLS 7. ANT PICK: STONEY CREEK 24, BLOOMFIELD HILLS 3.

Berkley at Ferndale: The Bears have been red hot lately but this will be the first test that Berkley will see in the Eagles. Ferndale lost a tough one last week to Groves but has an opportunity to make a statement against one of its main rivals. DD PICK: BERKLEY 14, FERNDALE 10. ANT PICK: BERKLEY 28, FERNDALE 27.

Seaholm at Adams: The Highlanders have been a huge disappointment this season especially defensibly at 0-2. The Maples have a good quarterback in Tommy Sheppard but have questions defensibly and survived North Farmington 17-16 last week. Adams is at home and it will be a close one. The Highlanders defense is still an issue especially it’s pass defense and look for Seaholm to expose that match up. DD PICK: SEAHOLM 28, ADAMS 27. ANT PICK: ADAMS 35, SEAHOLM 7.

North Farmington at Rochester: Raiders coach Kyle Schultz took a huge gamble last week in going for the win against Seaholm but it was incomplete and the Maples won 17-16 last week. The Falcons haven’t scored a point this season. Rochester was shut out 42-0 two weeks ago by Lapeer and 36-0 by Harrison last week. The Falcons could score points this week being at home but won’t win the game despite hope from Oakland Press MIPrepzone coordinator Keith Dunlap’s school. DD PICK: NORTH FARMINGTON 24, ROCHESTER 0. ANT PICK: NORTH FARMINGTON 21, ROCHESTER 7.

Hazel Park at Pontiac: Somebody will win this game this week and end a miserable losing streak. The Vikings have lost 15 straight games since beating Royal Oak 58-47 in 2012. The Phoenix have lost 17 straight games since beating Troy Athens 17-14 in 2012. Someone is going to be very happy just for this week. DD PICK: PONTIAC 17, HAZEL PARK 6. ANT PICK: PONTIAC 17, HAZEL PARK 7.

OAA Recap Week Two.

Written Sunday September 7th, at 1:00 AM

Dragons Den Top 10:
1. Clarkston
2. Harrison
3. Southfield
4. Oxford
5. West Bloomfield
6. Oak Park
7. Orion
8. Avondale
9. Groves
10. Stoney Creek

Scores from last week:
1. Clarkston 38, Bloomfield Hills 7
2. Harrison 36, Rochester 0
3. Southfield 35, Adams 0
4. Oxford 7, 10. Stoney Creek 0
5. West Bloomfield 42, Troy 0
6. Oak Park 43 Royal Oak 0
7. Orion 35, Troy Athens 22
8. Avondale 43, Hazel Park 6
9. Groves 27, Ferndale 16
Berkley 55, Pontiac 9
Seaholm 17, North Farmington 16
Farmington 35, Lathrup 14

BIG WIN OF THE NIGHT: Seaholm: The Maples bounced back at Bloomfield Hills tonight as they had to make a defensive stand against North Farmington. Raiders coach Kyle Schultz made a gamble late after his team scored a touchdown. North Farmington went for two to win the game but the Seaholm defense along with the Maples Forest made a stop and recovered a on side kick late preserving the one point win and give them some much needed momentum heading into next week’s game with Adams.

TOUGH LOSS: Troy Athens: The Red Hawks had opportunities against Lake Orion on Saturday and was tied 14-14 at the half. The second half however was all Dragons. Lake Orion would outscore Troy Athens 21-8 in the second half and cruse to it’s first victory of the season 35-22. The Red Hawks have an interesting home match up with Oxford next week and they have a shot at this game if things go right.

TEAM THAT NEEDS A HUG: Stoney Creek: The Cougars had their opportunities to win at Oxford on Saturday, they limited the Wildcats to 78 total yards and shut down Glacier Wallington but they missed a 47 yard field goal and then gave up a touchdown to running back Scott Stubenrauch. Stoney Creek had one last chance but was intercepted late and lost 7-0 to the Wildcats. The Cougars will travel to Bloomfield Hills next week to take on the Blackhawks.

TEAM RIDING WITH THE MOJO: Berkley: Bears coach Chris Sikoria has done well lately going 2-0 and has only allowed 16 points in the last two games. Berkley rolled past Pontiac 55-9 on Saturday and beat Holly 31-7 two weeks ago. Berkley will have an interesting test coming up with Ferndale next week and will have to travel back to Avondale, and go to Farmington. The good news for the Bears is that Groves comes to Hurley Field.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME: Adams: The Highlanders now sit at 0-2 and is in serious danger of missing the playoffs for the second time in three seasons. Adams had running clock ran against them against Southfield in a 35-0 home loss. The Highlanders lost 28-20 two weeks ago to Stoney Creek and since they were leading 20-7 in that game they have been outscored 56-0 in that stretch. Adams still has to travel to Oak Park and Harrison during the season. The reason why they sit at 0-2 is their pass defense who allowed two touchdowns in the air against the Blue Jays. If the Highlanders want to turn its season around they must improve on its pass defense and also get back to basics.

Top 5 OAA Games Week 3:

6. Oak Park at 2. Harrison: Last season’s meeting in Farmington was 60-52 Hawks. Now the Knights and Hawks will meet again back in Farmington. Harrison comes in unbeaten but hasn’t been tested yet while Oak Park played Detroit Cass Tech. This will be a huge game for both teams if they want to keep pace with Southfield in the White.

5. West Bloomfield at 1. Clarkston: This is a big test to see where the Lakers are at especially when it comes to the schedule. West Bloomfield hasn’t been tested yet with wins over Dearborn and Troy but that will all change when they travel to Clarkston to meet the defending division one state champs. The Wolves played Macomb Dakota early in the season and will give the Lakers problems with depth and size. If West Bloomfield wins this game, then they would send a huge statement to the Red.

8. Avondale at Farmington: This is a big test for the Yellow Jackets and Josh Holloman. This Falcons defense will be the best defense that Avondale will see so far this season. Farmington meanwhile failed miserably in its first test to defend a good running back in quarterback Javon Shaw of Harrison. Let’s see how they handle Holloman. Avondale will have a huge test on how to guard Desmond Kirpatrick and quarterback Kyle Collins, both were huge last week against Lathrup.

4. Oxford at Troy Athens: The Wildcats had to survive Stoney Creek last week and now will face a different attack in the Red Hawks. Oxford will try to use it’s pound the rock slow method offense against Troy Athens Missouri like offense. If Alex Muscatt is accurate in throwing the football then they could do some damage against the Wildcats defense but Troy Athens defense must stop Glaicer Wallington and Scott Stubenrauch if the Red Hawks have any chance of pulling off the upset.

Seaholm at Adams: This is the most interesting game of the week in Rochester. The Highlanders sit 0-2 and the Maples sit 1-1. Seaholm beat North Farmington 17-16 and their well known defense returned for one week after getting destroyed by Groves two weeks ago and they must win this game and beat Oak Park, Southfield, and Harrison to have a shot at the playoffs. The Maples will see a veer attack led by running back Clarence Broadnax and quarterback Kyle Wood. Both players will look at trying to get Adams their first win of the 2014 season and if they lose this one it would be the first time that coach Tony Patrino has started 0-3 at Adams. The Highlanders are now a must win mode now if they have any shot of making the playoffs.

We’ll see what happens next week, stay tuned to OAA Now for complete coverage.

The Power of Krause Strikes Again.

Written Sunday September 7th, at 12:00 AM

Matt Krause has been a machine in the last two weeks.

Last week against Chippewa Valley he had 410 yards and four touchdowns. On Saturday against Troy Athens he pretty much had a similar outcome with 335 yards and four touchdowns in the Dragons 35-22 victory in northern Troy.

Krause right now is the state’s top running back statically, having over 700 rushing yards and eight touchdowns.

Troy Athens (1-1, 0-1 Red) would strike first on Friday when quarterback Alex Mussat passed the ball to Jake Vincent who made two Lake Orion defenders miss for a five yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

Then the severe storms came causing the game to go to Saturday.

Lake Orion (1-1, 1-0 Red) running back Keith Fields would get his team on the board scoring on a jet sweep from nine yards making the score 7-7.

After getting a stop on defense it was Krause who struck going 70 yards on a toss sweep making the score 14-7 Dragons.

The Red Hawks would strike as Mussat ran a quarterback sneak from one yard out making the score 14-14.

Lake Orion would have a chance to take the lead late but Krause fumbled the ball at the Troy Athens six yard line keeping the score 14-14 at halftime.

The Dragons suspect defense came to play a bit by stopping the Red Hawks spread attack and would give the ball back to the offense. Three plays later Krause struck again going 75 yards and a 21-14 lead for his team.

Lake Orion would get another stop yet again and then Krause struck again from 27 yards out making the score 28-14 Dragons.

The Red Hawks struggled getting it together a bit and the Dragons made them pay as Krause scored his fourth touchdown making the score 35-14 Lake Orion.

Troy Athens would add one more touchdown as Mussat found Derrick Nelson for a nine yard touchdown pass and a two point conversion pass from Mussat to Nick Vandekerkhoff making the score 35-22.

Musatt would finish 22 for 42 for 184 yards, two touchdown passes and one rushing touchdown for the Red Hawks. Cameron Kotsich was two for two passing for 85 yards for the Dragons.

Lake Orion is 22-1 now all time against the Red Hawks and have won 14 straight games.

The Dragons will finally have a home game this week as they take on the Troy Colts (0-2, 0-1 Red.) The Colts lost 42-0 to West Bloomfield and 7-3 two weeks ago to Sterling Heights Stevenson.

We’ll see what happens.

OAA Picks Week Two.

Written Wednesday September 3rd at 11:00 PM

Bloomfield Hills at 1. Clarkston: When looking at this game the Blackhawks look to be in big trouble against a good Wolves team that is determined to put more points up this week. Bad matchup for Bloomfield Hills. DD PICK: CLARKSTON 49, BLOOMFIELD HILLS 0. ANT PICK: CLARKSTON 41, BLOOMFIELD HILLS 3.

Rochester at 2. Harrison: The Hawks put 48 points up last week at Farmington. The Falcons allowed 42 points against Lapeer. Get the idea here??? DD PICK: HARRISON 56, ROCHESTER 0. ANT PICK: HARRISON 49, ROCHESTER 9.

3. Stoney Creek at 4. Oxford: This is a huge early Red matchup. The Cougars got a huge win last week over Rochester Adams but remember they beat Lake Orion last season and got blown out the next week by Clarkston on the road. The Wildcats won last week over Romeo and look to go 2-0 on the blue turf. DD PICK: OXFORD 28, STONEY CREEK 21. ANT PICK: OXFORD 17, STONEY CREEK 14.

Troy at 5. West Bloomfield: The Lakers were very impressive last week over Dearborn, meanwhile the Colts couldn't score a touchdown against Sterling Heights Stevenson last week. This game is where West Bloomfield started to make it's stand and they will continue to do so this week. DD/ANT PICK: WEST BLOOMFIELD 35, TROY 3.

Royal Oak at 6. Oak Park: This will be a nightmare game for coach Tim Chapman's Ravens. I was disappointed when Royal Oak gave up 26 unanswered points in a 26-3 loss to Utica Ford II last week. The Knights had a 26-13 lead late against Detroit Cass Tech only to lose 27-26 at Wayne State last week. Oak Park is not in a good mood and they will take out all fury on Royal Oak. DD PICK: OAK PARK 56, ROYAL OAK 0. ANT PICK: OAK PARK 35, ROYAL OAK 0.

7. Southfield at Rochester Adams: The Highlanders pass defense was exposed last week against Stoney Creek while the Blue Jays lost a tough game to Orchard Lake St. Mary's last week. Hard to believe that someone will be 0-2 after this game. History is not on Southfield's side in this series, they have never won at Adams in it's history. DD PICK: SOUTHFIELD 21, ADAMS 20. ANT PICK: ADAMS 21, SOUTHFIELD 20.

Hazel Park at 8. Avondale: Josh Holloman will be ready to go against a bad Vikings defense that allowed 44 points last week against Warren Fitzgerald. The Yellow Jackets who beat Redford Union 46-8 last week will be ready for next week against Farmington. DD PICK: AVONDALE 56, HAZEL PARK 0. ANT PICK: AVONDALE 49, HAZEL PARK 0.

9. Orion at Troy Athens: Matt Krause went nuts last week against Chippewa Valley but the question for the Dragons will be is can they get that balance with the passing game and also find a defense after allowing 38 points last week. The Red Hawks are balanced offensively but that had to score a touchdown with 36.6 seconds left last week in a 34-31 win over Macomb L'Anse Cruse North. Both teams have size up front and athletes but I see Orion pulling this one out. DD PICK: ORION 42, TROY ATHENS 28. ANT PICK: ORION 35, TROY ATHENS 14.

10. Groves at Ferndale: The Falcons found themselves some balance last week against Seaholm in a 42-19 win. The Eagles were impressive in Erik Royal's debut at Ferndale in beating Livonia Clarenceville 56-20. Clarenceville went to the playoffs last season at 11-1. This game will be very close but Groves might have a bit more balance to overcome home field. DD PICK: GROVES 24, FERNDALE 21. ANT PICK: GROVES 17, FERNDALE 14.

Southfield Lathrup at Farmington: The Falcons were just pathetic last week in allowing 48 points to mighty Harrison. The Chargers had a nice win last week over Detroit Southeastern 35-6. Also Southfield Lathrup remembers last season when they allowed 19 points in the fourth quarter to lose 25-6 to Farmington. The game this season is at the same place but it will be a different result. DD PICK: LATHRUP 35, FARMINGTON 20. ANT PICK: FARMINGTON 28, LATHRUP 17.

North Farmington at Seaholm: The Maples youth got to them last week in a 42-19 loss to Groves. The Raiders blew out Pontiac 42-0. This game is in the Maples Forest but this is a different Seaholm team than a season ago. North Farmington has the experience on both sides of the ball and could be a sleeper in the loaded White. DD PICK: NORTH FARMINGTON 28, SEAHOLM 12. ANT PICK: SEAHOLM 21, NORTH FARMINGTON 17.

Pontiac at Berkley: The Bears pulled off an impressive 31-7 win over Holly last week. The Phoenix in John Lloyd's debut got crushed 42-0 by North Farmington. Berkley has the talent to be a sleeper in what is already a loaded Blue this season. DD PICK: BERKLEY 49, PONTIAC 7. ANT PICK: BERKLEY 21, PONTIAC 3.

Top Five OAA Games for Week Two

Written Tuesday September 2nd, at 2:00 PM

Big Games Week Two:

10. Groves at Ferndale: The Eagles made a statement in a 56-20 blowout win over Livonia Clarenceville. A win in Beverly Hills will tell how much improvement that coach Erik Royal's team has done. Groves might have found a replacement running back to go along with Zach Van Fossen and are riding high after winning 42-19 over Seaholm last week.

7. Southfield at Adams: It's hard to believe the loser of this game will be 0-2 and in a big hole trying to make the playoffs. The Blue Jays are as talented as anyone especially in the secondary but lost a tough 21-19 match up to Orchard Lake St. Mary's last week at Wayne State. The Highlanders who runs a veer offense and went to the regional finals last season was shocked 28-20 by Stoney Creek last week. Expect this game to be close.

3. Stoney Creek at 4. Oxford: This game will be interesting. The Wildcats may have found a power back to go along with quarterback Glacier Wallington in last week's 28-20 win over Romeo. The Cougars had their best win of their school history last week over Adams (not Lake Orion) 28-20 and will be ready for this week. Stoney Creek better be careful of a letdown after a big win, the last time they had one ask Clarkston.

Southfield-Lathrup at Farmington: This game will be close between two former white rivals now in the Blue. The Chargers are much improved after beating Detroit Southeastern 35-6 last week and will be motivated after losing 25-6 last year to the Falcons. Farmington was a complete disaster last week losing 48-12 to Harrison and if they lose this one then they are in huge trouble especially with Avondale next week.

9. Orion at Troy Athens: The Red Hawks came off a huge win 34-31 last week over Macomb L'Anse Cruse North will have a huge task against a Dragons rushing attack who put up nearly 500 yards on the ground last week against Chippewa Valley in a 38-35 loss. Lake Orion must develop it's passing game and also defense if it wants to avoid an 0-2 start.

22. Hazel Park Vikings (0-1)- Rome wasn't built overnight but the Vikings have the right coach in place.

18. Troy Colts (0-1)- Colts were respectable in defeat and will get better.
17. Farmington Falcons (0-1)- Falcons were horrible last week against Harrison.

4. Oxford Wildcats (1-0)- The Wildcats have a big one this week with SC.
3. Stoney Creek Cougars (1-0)- The Cougars better be careful of a letdown this week.
2. Harrison Hawks (1-0)- Hawks were very good last week, got a big one next week.
1. Clarkston Wolves (1-0)- Wolves defense still has some issues but offense looked good.

OAA Week One Recap:

Written Monday September 1st, at 10:15 PM

1. Clarkston
2. Harrison
3. Stoney Creek
4. Oxford
5. West Bloomfield
6. Oak Park
7. Southfield
8. Avondale
9. Orion
10. Groves

Huge Win: Clarkston 24, Macomb Dakota 21. The Wolves led by quarterback DJ Zezula led 17-0 early in the game but had to overcome a late Cougars rally to seal the win for Clarkston.

Tough Loss: Detroit Cass Tech 27, Oak Park 26. This game was a good as advertised at Wayne State. Both running backs Mike Weber of Detroit Cass Tech and John Kelly of the Knights played well. Oak Park had a 26-13 lead late but gave up two touchdowns late along with a last stand.

Team that needs a hug: Lake Orion. The Dragons led 21-7 early in the game at Chippewa Valley but mistakes, penalties, bad third quarter, and bad officiating caused Lake Orion to lose 38-35 to the Big Reds. The Dragons need to bounce back against Troy Athens this week to avoid being 0-2.

Are You Kidding me???: Stoney Creek 28, Adams 20. The Cougars overcame a 20-7 deficit to shock the Highlanders. This is a huge win for Stoney Creek and coach Brad Zube and a tough loss for coach Tony Patrinio who lost his first game to a Rochester school since 2003. The Cougars have a tough game this week at Oxford and Stoney Creek had a letdown last season when they beat Lake Orion and lost to Clarkston the next week. Adams has a tougher road and that starts with Southfield who lost to Orchard Lake St Mary's 21-19 at Wayne State.

????: Utica Ford 26, Royal Oak 3. Coach Tim Chapman's debut in Royal Oak started well up 3-0 but the Falcons scored 26 unanswered points on the Ravens. Royal Oak will play an angry Oak Park team next week.

OAA Recap:

I thought looking at the games, I was impressed with Ferndale and Southfield Lathrup. The Chargers beat Detroit Southeastern 35-6 and the Eagles really impressed me with a 56-20 win over Livonia Clarenceville.

Oxford and Clarkston had big wins over Romeo and Macomb Dakota respectably. The Wildcats beat the Bulldogs 28-20 and the Wolves beat the Cougars 24-21. Both games were competitive games.

The game that really shocked me was Adams losing to Stoney Creek 28-20. The Highlanders were a regional finals team last season and returned a lot of experience back. The Cougars fell to Adams 17-6 last season in the playoffs and were suppose to be rebuilding a bit. The only thing the Cougars need to change is their jersey combination but Stoney Creek showed that they are no fluke and will be a force this season.

I thought Lake Orion really got screwed over big time in Macomb County. The Dragons had a penalty every single drive they had in the game against Chippewa Valley. Also add that they had two touchdowns called back due to penalties. The mistakes didn't help either as the Dragons were out scored 21-7 in the second half and lost 38-35 despite having a 410 yards, four touchdowns game from Matt Krause. The defense was awful in that game for the Dragons as well.

I wasn't surprised Rochester got crushed by Lapeer 42-0, Harrison torching Farmington 48-12, and North Farmington beat Pontiac 35-6. Avondale beating Redford Union 46-8.

I was surprised that Berkley crushed Holly 31-7, Troy lost 7-3 to Sterling Heights Stevenson, Troy Athens beat Macomb L'Anse Cruse North 34-31, and that Hazel Park lost 44-7 to Warren Fitzgerald.

We'll see what happens next week. Also catch OAA Now for complete coverage.

Dragons Invitational Recap

Written Monday September 1st, at 9:15 PM

When I look at the Lake Orion Volleyball Invite. There were some very good teams here and there were those who struggled during the tournament.

These teams are looking toward their respected league seasons and this tournament proved it.

Farmington Hills Mercy ended up winning the tournament beating Lake Orion while Northville won the silver pool.

Mercy this season will be very good and will be a huge threat to Birmingham Marian in the Catholic League along with Notre Dame Prep. "I just think right now we are running a couple of different offenses. It's still early in the season, we're just trying to get the kinks out" said Marlins coach Lorreta Vogel.

Lake Orion has played a lot of volleyball the last two days but have proven that they will be a force on the Red this season behind Hannah Murdock, Kory Varney, Nicole, and Natalie Wehner. "We're balanced, it's just a matter of if we come to play and focus, we'll be fine" said Dragons coach Tony Scravada.

Clarkston struggled a bit in pool play but has proven it will be a threat in Red play. "The league is on their mind" said coach Kelly Averall-Pinter, who got married this summer. The Wolves do have some questions at the back row but Averall-Pinter will have some senior experience to go with this season "we have a lot of senior returnees, we got some experience back there." Oh and lets not mention they have Taylor Dellinger back as well "She is one of the best hitters in the world" Averall-Pinter said of Dellinger.

Seaholm proved with their experience that they will be a good team this season as well and is getting ready for league season. "We got ten seniors" said Maples assistant coach Jason Gambon who was coaching for coach Heather Lippert who had a teaching commitment. "It's always tough. It (The Red) prepares us for the postseason" he concluded.

Oxford though young but they proved they can play with anyone and will rely on youth and balance this season "Last night our first test was a little iffy. Missing Darien (Bandel) hurts us but we got six players. It's just a matter of balancing it out" said coach Kristi McDevitt. Oxford could be a dark horse in the Red this season. "The league (Red) is one of the toughest in the state" McDevitt added.

North Branch though missing two of its top players to injuries have a lot of expectations in Class B and in the Tri Valley Conference's east division. "We hope to get better everyday" said coach Jim Fish. The Broncos has some issues when it comes to playing the bigger schools but is willing to play anybody. "We are hoping to be on top of our league and hoping to compete with Mount Morris and those type of schools" Fish concluded.

Mount Morris is a sleeping giant has an energetic coach and a good team that could do damage this season.

Stoney Creek looked good and will rely on its strong junior class to carry the Cougars this season. "I really like where we are at" said Cougars coach Mandy Moran "Our core group is our junior class and we added two sophomores and two freshman" she added to this season's Cougar Core. The goals is to improve this season "Our goal is to finish fourth or better (Red this season.) I think this year we aren't the newbees anymore so we know what to expect" Moran concluded.

Adams struggled with inconsistency and must replace it's liberio from a season ago. Coach Irick Gardner must address this issue with his team and with the White schedule coming up they must address this quick. Gardner expects his team to be better than last season. "We are better than last year, we are a better team. Even if you lose one player we are a better team" he added.

Macomb L'Anse Cruse North had wins over Clarkston and Adams in pool play and will be an interesting team to watch in the MAC Red this season.

Macomb L'Anse Cruse struggled today but could be an interesting team to watch this season.

Holly is another team who struggled and didn't look good until a game against Grosse Pointe North but still lost that game.

Grosse Pointe North will be a good team this season and will be in the mix this season in the MAC Red this season.

Macomb Dakota struggled at the tournament but still has the talent to compete for a MAC Red crown despite the fact they are inexperienced "we are very young but we want to come out on top. We have done it the past three years" said coach Traci Ferguson. The Cougars will struggle with the loss of star player Carly Snyder who is now at Florida. "There is no replacing Carly" Ferguson concluded.

Northville is a good team and should do damage in the KLAA Central this season. The Mustangs struggled going 2-4 in pool play but won the sliver bracket. Expect Northville to be a major player this season.

Novi is also a very good team and should do damage this season. The only down side is Northville and Novi are in the same district and same league in the Kensington Lakes Athletic Association. The Wildcats will be a threat this season in not only the league but the state as well.

Lake Orion beat Novi and Seaholm in tourney play. Mercy beat Clarkston, Mount Morris who shocked North Branch in the Quarterfinals and Lake Orion. Seaholm beat Stoney Creek but lost to Lake Orion. Clarkston lost to Mercy.

We'll see what happens this season.
