The Bloomfield Hills Blackhawks are an interesting team so
far this season riding a ton of emotion after last season’s surprising district
championship run.
This will be the first meeting of the season between the
Dragons and Bloomfield Hills which will take place on Thursday at Orion.
The Blackhawks upset Birmingham Marian and Seaholm but lost
to Grosse Pointe North in the Regional Semifinal in 2015.
Blackhawks coach Bob Hurdle returns seven players from that
district championship including Julia Caravias, Olivia Smith, Sara Teer, Julia
Charlick, and Meredith Wenson are all back for Bloomfield Hills.
Smith, Teer, and Caravis are Bloomfield Hills top killers while
Wenson and freshman Alexa Rousseau have made significant contributions blocking, setting,
digging, and scoring while Lexie Formanek is the team’s top blocker this
season.
Bloomfield Hills was an honorable mention in the latest
State poll and comes into league play at 1-1. The Blackhawks beat Oxford in
four games but lost a five set thriller to Stoney Creek at home in which they
were up 2-0 in the set before losing three tough matches to the Cougars.
Prediction:
Both teams are very experienced teams that could make deep
playoff runs pending if they get by their respective district opponents (Orion-Clarkston,
Oxford: Bloomfield Hills-Marian, Seaholm, Troy, Groves)
I can see this matchup going four games but the Dragons have
played a tough schedule during the season and also during tournament play. The
Blackhawks also went five games with Stoney Creek so mental toughness will be
an interesting thing to keep an eye on.
PICK: Orion in four games.
We'll see what happens.
