The Orion Dragons will have some growing pains this season,
especially on offense.
Orion did bounce back from a 27-7 loss to Chippewa Valley
last week and got a measure of revenge from last season’s 21-14 loss to Stoney
Creek in the process by beating the Cougars 30-10 on Thursday night.
The second half was the turning point for the Dragons.
Stoney Creek and Orion traded field goals in the first half
with the Dragons striking first when Parker Blust kicked a 47-yard field goal
and the Cougars John Carson hit a 20-yard field goal.
Orion finally got their offense going after quarterback Ryan
Kolp threw the ball to Max Horneffer who then threw the ball to Pierce Burke
for a 19-yard touchdown pass for a 10-3 Dragons lead.
Orion would then strike again after forcing Stoney Creek to
go three and out. Kolp then threw a screen pass to Chris Wilson for a 45-yard
touchdown pass and a 17-3 Dragons lead.
Stoney Creek would answer thanks to a couple of bad
penalties against the Dragons and on a fourth and goal Cougars quarterback
Frank Potenza, whom was huge in last season’s game connected with Brady
Campbell, whom was also huge in last season’s game from three yards out and a
17-10 Orion lead.
Orion would respond thanks to Horneffer whom had a 61 yard
run to the one-yard line. One play later Kolp cashed in from one yard out and a
24-10 Dragons lead.
The Dragons defense shut the Cougars down on the next drive
as Joe Slayton picked off Potenza and went 25 yards to midfield.
Orion would cash in on a Nick Fletcher touchdown making the
score 30-10 Dragons.
Orion is now 1-1, and 1-0 in the Red on the season and will go to the Swamp to play the Lakers next week. West Bloomfield has outscored the Dragons 62-0 the last two seasons. This will be interesting between these two Green and White teams.
