Dragons Offense Sloppy but find way to rout the Red Hawks 40-7

Written Saturday September 7th, at 12:30 AM

In a game where a potential letdown was possible after an emotional win over Oxford last week the first offensive series the Dragons had looked like it could be a long night for the first home game of the season on Friday night.

On the Dragons first possession on offense Dragons running back Chris Leigh fumbled the hand off on a jet sweep and the ball was recovered by Western Michigan recruit Lucas Bezerra for a touchdown for the Red Hawks and a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter.

Lake Orion then got things figured out on the next possession where wide receiver Zach Arnold took a jet sweep from 17 yards out and tied the game at 7-7.

The Dragons then would take the lead after a defensive stop on a nine yard power run by running back Matt Krause. Krause almost lost the football once as well during the game.

Lake Orion would then increase the lead after a turnover and after that quarterback Connor Grant found wide receiver Zach Greene who tip toed into the right end zone marker for a 21-7 lead.

Late into the second quarter the Dragons got the football back which resulted in another touchdown for Grant this time from 18 yards out to wide receiver Josh Bays but the PAT was blocked and the score remained 27-7 heading into the half.

Troy Athens defense stepped up the pressure in the third quarter causing two three and out sequences but the Red Hawks couldn’t get anything going against the Dragons defense.

Lake Orion then scored again late in the third quarter when running back Corey Ester took a jet sweep 43 yards down the right side of the end zone for a 33-7 lead but the PAT was blocked yet again.

In the fourth quarter, Arnold closed out the scoring by rushing for 64 yards into the end zone for a 40-7 lead.

The Dragons defense led by Trenton Elkins, Justin Cathers, Brendan Gasche, Brendan Rourke, Grant, Kyle Bell, and Brad Chisholm stopped the Red Hawks offense all night on defense posting a shutout on the night.

Lake Orion looked sloppy on offense tonight but they are 2-0 and 1-0 in the Red. Troy Athens (0-2, 0-1 Red) is not the greatest on offense but did play much better than they played against Warren Mott last week. The Dragons will host the West Bloomfield Lakers (1-1, 0-1 Red, lost to Clarkston 41-18) next week then they have the big showdown in two weeks with Stoney Creek in Rochester. This should be an interesting ride folks.
