Heath making an impact on the NFL.

Written Monday September 9th at 12:15 PM

It seems like yesterday when Jeff Heath a 2008 Lake Orion graduate made a 49 yard field goal to beat Sterling Heights Stevenson 38-36 in the  Regional Finals in Sterling Heights and leading the Dragons to the State Finals at Ford Field.

Now he is in the National Football League.

Jeff Heath currently plays for the Dallas Cowboys on special teams. He wears number 38 on the team and is on the punt, kickoff, and kick return teams. Heath is a free safety on the Dallas depth chart. The Cowboys beat the New York Giants 37-27 on Sunday night in Dallas but the journey that Heath took wasn't easy.

Heath had to earn his way into the NFL through training and hard work. He ran a 4.4 40 yard time for the Detroit Lions and Tennessee Titans but wasn't chosen by both of those teams.

Heath is an undrafted rookie from Saginaw Valley State (where he played for four seasons) and played free safety at times during the preseason along with his high school and college career. His performance and hard work impressed owner Jerry Jones, coach Jason Garrett and the rest of the Cowboys staff that he earned a spot on the 53 man roster for the 2013 season.

Heath has been a strong safety, wide receiver, kicker, and been on special teams no matter if it was in Middle School, High School, College, and the pros.

What adds to the drama is that the Heath will return to play Ford Field and the first time since 2008 when his Dallas Cowboys plays the Lions on October 27th. Heath was on the bench in the 2010 State Championship team so he should know Ford Field well. There will likely be a huge Lake Orion and Saginaw turnout in support for Heath.

Heath is the first Dragon to go into the NFL and the second in the area. Oxford's Zach Line, who played at Southern Methodist is currently a fullback on the Minnesota Vikings.

We here at the Dragons Den wish Heath the best of luck on his football career in Big D.
