Dragons Volleyball Send League Statement after struggling during tournament play.

Written Thursday September 15th at 11:10 PM

The Dragons volleyball program kicked off the league play of its season in much better fashion then they have shown in tournament play.

Orion has been struggling a bit in tournaments which is the reason why the dropped to 13th in the State. They had an opportunity to get off to a good start when 12th ranked Stoney Creek came to town.

The Dragons would then send a statement beating the Cougars in three games 25-9, 25-12, 25-21 on Thursday night.

What made this more ironic was that Ross Talbott coaches the Cougars. Talbott enters his first season behind the Stoney Creek sidelines taking over for Mandy Moran. He coached at Orion from 2012-2013 resigned in 2013 and Tony Scavarda took over the Dragons.

It was shocking how Orion (15-5, 1-0 Red) controlled this game especially on the defensive end. 16 blocks (seven by Mallorie Berriman, five by Danielle Sargent), 12 digs from Lindsay Wightman, 16 assists from Wren McCaulay, and 14 combined kills by Sarah Kelly and Leah Kalugar.

Stoney Creek (14-10, 0-1 Red) though a very young team as they have only two seniors led by Erika Ward. They have experience having play very good competition in tournament play.

The Cougars were led by freshman outside hitter Kate Stration whom had seven kills and five digs. Ward had 21 digs.

Orion will play Harrison on the road on Tuesday and will host Bloomfield Hills next Thursday. They will compete in the Portage Central Invite on Saturday.

We'll see what happens.
