Dragons Sweep Blackhawks. Await Wolves Next.

In a hostile environment like Bloomfield Hills on Thursday night where the music Ignition Mix and Blackhawks fans in the stands trying to make the lives miserable of the opposing team while cheering their team on. There were flyers on Twitter to come out and support the Blackhawks in pulling off a big upset over the second ranked team in Class A.

The second ranked Dragons however were in another mood. They did not care what environment they were in and were taking names with them.

Bloomfield Hills found that out the hard way.

Lake Orion came back from an 18-17 deficit in the third set outscored the Blackhawks 7-2 to close out a three game sweep of Bloomfield Hills 25-13, 25-18, and 25-20.

The Dragons were led by well their whole team in Hannah Murdock, Rachel Giwa, Ally Shinouskis, Tess Marshall, Maddie Hargraves, Kori Varney, Megan Werner, Natalie Werner, Hannah Suciu, Kayla Rockey, Wies Hurkmans, and Marley Redd.

The volleyball girls came to play and it showed early in the first set.

Lake Orion dominated and controlled the net against a very good Bloomfield Hills frontcourt in the form of Rockey, Suciu, and Hurkmans. The Dragons never trailed a set in that first match and was very active on both sides of the ball early.

In the second set, the Dragons were dominant early in the form of Tess Marshall. Marshall had four kills early and the Dragons were up at one point 14-5. Lake Orion outscored Bloomfield Hills in the second game 10-8 and had a 24-13 lead at one point until Katie Wenson, Shannon Wilson and crew got it going for the Blackhawks. Bloomfield Hills cut the lead down to six but Murdock ended the Blackhawks rally with a kill of her own to give the Dragons a 2-0 lead heading into the third match.

In the third set, Bloomfield Hills started to get the momentum and came out with a vengeance. The Blackhawks played with energy and confidence early on, forcing the Dragons to match their energy. The two teams traded the lead four times and were tied 12 times during the set. Bloomfield Hills had an 18-17 lead before Lake Orion rallied to outscore the Blackhawks 7-3 with a Hargraves kill to close the game and set out.

Marshall finished with 11 kills and eight digs, Murdock had nine kills and five digs, Giwa had 28 assists, Rockey had four blocks, and Hurkmans had three kills and two blocks for the Dragons.

Katie Wenson had nine kills and three aces, Shannon Wilson had nine kills and Baylee Werner had six kills on the night for the Blackhawks.

The Dragons improve their record to 29-4-2 and 3-0 in the Red. The Blackhawks are now 19-10-1 and 1-2 in the Red on the season.

Lake Orion has a monster showdown on Tuesday night when the Clarkston Wolves come a calling to Lake Orion. Clarkston swept Stoney Creek in three 25-20, 25-22, and 25-13. The Wolves have won three of the last four regular season and playoff meetings over the Dragons (all were five game sets including the district finals last season. The state semifinal match in 2011 in Battle Creek was four games.)


We’ll see what happens on Tuesday.
